York Uni Futsal Firing on All Cylinders

The University of York's three teams have all got off to a great start in the York league, the Firsts and Thirds scoring almost thirty goals between them, and the Seconds narrowly missing out to FPL opposition FC Barsa. Match reports will be available on the Website and Banter Board.

In other news, sessions are off to a good start, with a strong turnout both from freshers and older faces.

York Uni Women's Team in FA Cup!

The University of York Women's Futsal team have qualified for the first ever FA Women's Futsal Cup, to be played July 7th & 8th in Sheffield, after a very successful run in the York League. Though they narrowly missed out to Selby for the top spot, the quality of the futsal played was top-notch and received an honourable mention at the York League awards evening. Also honoured at the York League awards was the Uni's Alannah, who received the prize for Player of the Season.

Futsal UY Legend - Paddy Drysdale

Patrick Drysdale should be looked upon as a legend in the short history of
York Futsal Club. However there are some common misconception about where
his legendary status comes from. Drysdale wasn't the greatest futsaller in
the World, and never claimed to be. Solid enough, unspectacular, he did a
job. Drysdale wasn't the greatest captain either. Although Futsal UY came
runners up in the league and cup, with the talent that Drysdale had at his
disposal, one could argue that Futsal UY could have and should have won the
lot. Drysdale however, was a fantastic president. And this is where his
legendary status comes from. He ran the Club 'like it was a State' (to quote
an anonymous admirer), and certainly put it on the map in terms of competing
on a National Level, and even within the University by coaxing many Freshers
to play (such as myself) who didn't even know what Futsal was.

It could be argued that Drysdale created many internal divisions within the
club (particularly between the First and Second team), but I would argue
that it was a good thing because it created controversy, interest, and most
importantly competition which attracted young and hungry players who
scrapped and clawed their way into the first team where they now remain.
Drysdale was no mug. He knew that a line had to be drawn in the sand, and
his relentless pursuit of success for himself and the club was the epitomy
of evolution. The healthy state that the club is in now can be attributed
down to him. He was 'Der Fuhrer', but in this writer's view that was
certainly a good thing for a club that was seemingly lacking success and
direction before the Drysdale Era came to pass.

In his second year he served as club treasurer under Lilly, along with
this, his 3 legged dogs continued to dominate the futsal tournaments,
winning all 3 in the second year an incredible feat. However, Drysdales
true legacy only began when he became President. As President, Drysdale
moved the club in a new direction, making the club more focused and
ambitious. As captain of the second team, he introduced new training
methods thanks partly to the influence of Dutchman Ties and also by
studying the training methods of Simon Cliffords Garforth Town.

Drysdales second team reached new heights, beating the 1st team 6-0 twice
on the way to finishing runners up in both the York League and cup, a sign
of his success as captain was the eventual graduation of 5 members of the
futsal UY squad to this years 1st team, including player of the year,
Andrew Wakeford and new 1st team captain Jonny McWilliams.

However, it wasnt just the second team that benefitted, the club toured
the Czech Republic entering a UEFA tournament and again entering IUTT in
Holland, where the clubs two sides finished 10th and 15th respectively and
also won the fair play trophy. On the domestic front, the club took part in
tournaments in Hull, Grimsby, Rotherham, Teeside and Edinburgh. They also
entered the innaugraul Futsal Premier League, which the 1st team qualified
for the finals in London. Possibly his finest hour, however, was the
organising of the PWC Open, a tournament conceived on the way back from
Brno, a one day tournament featuring 8 teams from the North of England, a
raging success which is bound to become a date in the futsal calendar for
years to come.

It would appear that Drysdale spent the entire year focussed on futsal and
although that may be true he did also have his wild moments. For example
pulling a fine looking girls mother whilst in Brno and being kicked out of
the gallery at presidents weekend for jumping over the counter and
attempting to steal a bottle of WKD. There were many sides to Drysdale,
however, he will be remembered for the dynamic way in which he changed the
Futsal club! And for this Patrick Drysdale truely is a legend of Futsal!

Camp, metro-sexual and laidback are not words that describe the Futsal
president succeeding Lilly. Futsal was to witness the biggest change in
Presidential style since history began. Out went Gandhi, in came Stalin.
Whereas Stalin had five year plans, this young man from Tunbridge Wells
(near London) had a one year plan - to change Futsal for ever.

Let's start at the beginning. Paddy Drysdale was born on 23rd December 1984.
As a baby he looked similar to his appearance now. Having achieved all he
wanted to achieve in life before coming to university, he greeted York with
the apathy and disinterest. He just wanted to take drugs with Swamp. This
was soon to change when he found Futsal. Suddenly, that burning desire to
succeed returned. He tossed away the pills and syringes and made a name for
himself as a tough tackling defender with a decent left peg (though not as
good a Carl's, his shots were still quite powerful and reasonably accurate).

Most people, without drive, would be happy with making tackles and twatting
the occasional long ranger. Not Paddy, 21 (then 19). He wanted power and
money. The Futsal treasury was soon his.

As Chancellor, Paddy only needed say 'the cash-point is just outside the
Sports Hall'. Membership fees in, job done. He was the most efficient
Chancellor to date. Yet, like Gordon Brown, or a young Hitler, Drysdale
wanted more. He wanted to get on the Legends board. He needed to be
President. This was achieved on a dark Tuesday night in March 2005, in a
sausage restaurant. Drysdale survived a late surge from Ron, who has never
been seen at Futsal, to be voted in as Futsal's next President.

Immediately, Drysdale sought to take Futsal in a new direction. The first
team was flung into the York League and a second team was created. By
October, the university had entered two teams into the York League and had
numerous friendlies arranged in glamorous northern cities. Drysdale also
took control of the second team (Futsal UY) and selected a bunch of
talented, determined and, in Myles' case, gay freshers. By the end of the
York League, Futsal UY had defeated the first's 6-0 twice and finished
runners up in the league and cup. The cup defeat on penalties against
Norwich Union after a five all draw, will live long in the memory.
Naturally, Drysdale dispatched his penalty.

Away from twatting in left footed penalties and beating the firsts, Drysdale
organised the first PWC York University Open in the newly opened tent. The
national champions Doncaster Deaf were in attendance as well as teams from
East Anglia, Teesside, Rotherham and Grimsby. There was even a Tannoy system
which blasted out music and scores, until it blew up after apparently being
sabotaged by a member of Doncaster Deaf. On the back of regional press
coverage, Drysdale also blagged York into the Mizuno Cup in the Czech
Republic. The team somewhat heavily but Drysdale pulled a 45 year old, which
he said was 'better then twatting in penalties'.

Drysdale will be remembered as a President who took team Futsal to a new
stratosphere. His also recognised the importance of banter, even though his
contributions were often poor and homophobic. Drysdale currently lives in
London. He is 21.

Winter Tournament a roaring success

For the first time since Summer term 2006, another University futsal tournament was ready to begin. 3 groups, 3 teams in each groups, only one winner. Anarchy 99, fresh off 2 consecutive championships, were looking to make it an impressive 3 straight. The competition was ready for them, with old seasoned teams like the 3-legged dogs of war and SKG still in contention, and a host of new teams including fresher phenomenon Anarchy 100, Goodricke footballers Danger Galore Mystery Tour, and Scotties Hotties. Complementing both the old and the new were the recombined PEPSI Max, strong contenders, former semi-finalists Cleethorpes Beach Patrol, and VN Sporty.

The day began with each group playing out, the top team from each group would go through to the semi's. With only 4 spots going to 9 teams the competition was always going to be fierce. After many tough group games, the top 3 were decided. Anarchy 99 went through yet again, but not without struggle. Scotties Hotties gave them a great game, almost holding them to a 1-1 draw, before Anarchy99 finally managed 2 quick goals for the win. Anarchy 100, the stylish blue-clad freshers team, also managed to get 2 wins, including a 1-0 win over SKG. The third group saw Danger Galore secure 2 wins in a very tough group, with the Dogs coming in second. SKG also got a second place spot in their group thanks to a solid win over Cleethorpes. In the third group, Scotties Hotties were able to finish second. The difficulty of the format revealed itself quickly, as Scotties Hotties, SKG, and Dogs all had 3 points, and so had to resort to Goal Difference. After a 3-1 win and a 1-3 loss Hotties were on 0, as were the dogs after a 2-1 win and a 0-1 loss. SKG lost their first 1-0, but with a 3-0 win in the final game they secured the 4th spot for the semis.

The plate competition saw the bottom 3, CBP, PEPSI Max and VN Sporty, fighting for 2 spots to the Plate Semi's. The short games provided a great amount of excitement, and ultimately produced 2 semifinalists, PEPSI Max and VN Sporty. They matched up with Scotties Hotties and Dogs of War. The Dogs had killed time during the last stage of the games by playing an extended friendly against their long time rivals, SKG. At times playing with 6 and 7 players on the pitch, both teams showed that futsal has preserved the fun side every bit as much as the competetive side. Unfortunately for the Dogs, they faced a hungry PEPSI team which was able to secure victory in another classic battle. Scotties Hotties, though well rested, also fell to VN Sporty. This set up a VN Sporty-PEPSI Max Plate final. The stakes were high. A crate of beer to the winner. With such high stakes, the game proved to be quite exciting, going to penalties. In a game where only one team can win, it proved to be VN Sporty's day.

In a rematch of last years finals (all three) the first Semifinal saw SKG take on Anarchy 99. Unfortunately for SKG, the result was the same as in the previous 2 meetings. Anarchy 99 won and proved their class with a comfortable win. On the other pitch, Anarchy 100, hoping to be the fresher sensation that Anarchy 99 had been the year before, fell to Danger Galore. Before the finals were played, during the plate final, SKG and Anarchy 100 played the 3rd/4th match. Having lost 1-0 the first meeting, SKG avenged the loss and proved why they were 3 time finalists, winning 6-3 against the newcomers.

The final, watched by all, was arguably the best final the futsal club had seen for a long time, certainly one of the closest finals since a 3-2 final, which had not happened for 2 years. This one proved to be a real nail-biter. Returning champions Anarchy 99 took on the Danger Galore Mystery Tour. In a see-saw battle, both teams showed strong resolve, great skill, and offensive prowess. Fighting to a 2-2 draw, Danger Galore let their guard down. In quick succession, Anarchy 99 slotted home 3 goals, every one impressive. It looked like the final was over. Danger Galore had other ideas though, battling back, they got a 3rd, and a 4th, and as the final minutes approached, a 5th. A draw was in the making, or so it seeemed. Showing their championship resolve, Anarchy 99 dug deep, and found a last goal. That was all it took. An impressive final finished 6-5.

Luck of Numbers sees National Champions edge out York

National champions Doncaster College for the Deaf edged out the University of York in a closely fought thriller which eventually finished a flattering 9-5 in favour of Doncaster. The end to end game was eventually decided by Doncaster's superior squad size and and an unusually poor performance by the match officials.

Work and other commitments saw York send only an 8-strong squad to face the National Champions at the Gemtec Arena in Hull. A further blow was landed just prior to kickoff when match officials controversially ruled Carl Lewis ineligible, due to the cast on his hand.

Taking this loss in stride York started the game brightly and their superior movement netted two early goals from depledge, the first from Tiago's smartly taken freekick and the second courtesy of good interplay between Depledge and Andy Wakeford. With Ben (Daisy) Cowley marshalling the defence, York created further good chances and were denied only by the woodwork and an array of fine saves from the Doncaster goalkeeper.

However, Doncaster gradually imposed themselves on the game and scored after a brilliant piece of team play. They added three more goals in the next few minutes courtesy of (respectively) a lot of luck, a bit of luck, and a defensive mixup. Half-time came and passed and within minutes York had pulled back to 4-4 courtesy of cool finishes by Depledge and Mark (The Pivot) McKay.

Doncaster quickly pulled ahead again depsite the best efforts of Seb Groth and James Sweetman, although parity was quickly restored as Depledge and McKay concocted a shoe-in for goal of the season. Kicking off after the Donnie goal, McKay and Depledge produced a series of dazziling one-two's to waltz through the Doncaster team before Depledge drilled home his fourth.

Unfortunately this was as good as it got for York. A lousy refeering decision saw a McKay goal ruled out (the referees did not see the ball cross the line) while at the other end, a bit of playacting saw Doncaster gain several free-kicks and a penalty (expertly saved by Sweetman).

Eventually the constant running (and rolling subs) of Doncaster saw them increase their lead while York were denied further goals (despite the best efforts of everyone).

By the time of the final whistle, Doncaster lead 9-5 although all concerned were quick to agree that the scoreline did not reflect the game. York's next and final game will be against FC Santos, a positive result from which could see them gain entry to the playoffs (top three teams from each division qualify).

Futsal Club Review of the Year 2005/2006

A baptism of fire for some, a reignition of the metaphorical flame that is 'Futsal' for others, 2005-2006 proved to be an extremely eventful time for members of the University of York Futsal Club. As a Fresher i noticed a bunch of lads playing (what I thought was) indoor football in the 'old' hall on a saturday. It turned out to be an event which would change my entire year. Its interesting looking back now at the figures who I remembered from that very day - three stood out for me in particular. One of them was John the Beard whose showboating would become nearly as distinctive as the bit of flesh between his mouth and nose. Another player who I remembered from that day was the current 2nd team captain and 'VP' Dan Webster, who was as enthusiastic for Futsal then as he is now. The other person I remember doesnt really need any 'pseudo-witty' description - Jonny McWilliams is all that needs to be written.

In the first term a number of Freshers (aside from Mr Webster who was thrown straight into the first team) were thrown into the second team known as Futsal UY. Under the Tutelage of one Patrick Drysdale, these players would go on a winning run before the end of the first term which would culminate in a crushing 6-0 defeat of the First team. Matthew Wilson's York Uni team started well enough racking up victory after victory, however all was not well within their camp, and although their league position by Christmas was healthy enough, things did not look good for the future.

Of equal significance was the Winter Tournament, an intense affair in which 'evolution' finally caught up with the legendary Three-Legged Dogs Of War. SKG proved dominant throughout the day, only drawing one game and winning the rest. The final was even more one-sided when they destroyed new-boys Anarchy 99 8-2 (or at least thats what i think the score was - it could have been more).

The second term continued to be a difficult time for the first team in the York league, and Futsal UY struggled at points as well as they were outfoxed tactically by Yorkrye (surely the most average team to ever win the York league) and outfought by an extremely physical Selby side. In the cup competition both sides made the semi-finals, however York's first team were unlucky to draw runaway leaders Norwich Union who beat them to set up a league and cup double. The only team that could stand in their way were Futsal UY. After a titantic battle Drysdale's men were outgunned on penalties. It was a cruel defeat after a good season for a team who, with the players at their disposal, shouldve won the lot.

Perhaps the most important night of the season happened in the second term as well - elections night. David Craddock was given the huge task of filling Drysdale's shoes, whose legacy at the club should never be forgotten. Mop-haired Daniel Webster took over the Vice-Presidency, and future hall of famer Tiago became Club Sec, as well as Mike Clark taking on the difficult role of treasurer. Straight away this new committee had to pick new captains - including choosing one for a new third team. In this writers view all three positions were never even in doubt. Louix Stansfield became new third team captain, Dan Webster became second team captain, and Jonny McWilliams cemented his place as one of the leading figures at the club by taking over the First team in his first year at the club.

The seasonal inter-club Futsal tournament came around, and it was time to go to War with one another again. Anarchy 99's aim to become the dominant force of Futsal at York was achieved - for the time being- in a one-sided final which was a slight let down in context of the day - it had been a fantastic tournament which deserved a better final. Although the first half lived up to expectations, the second half was as one-sided as the Winter Tournament finals second half had been. Anarchy 99 had two of the very best at the club in Wakeford and Depledge who would run riot for the whole day (and in the next tournament), not too mention the 'bulldozer' Henry Smith.

With no league in the final term it was up to Mr Craddock and his committee to find suitable things for the club to participate in - unfortunately he chose the Futsal Premier League (Joke!!!). Seriously though, although the price of it was high, and we didnt get off to a great start, the last three games weve participated in have been of the highest standard. Especially the Stormers game. One special mention must be made with regards to Tiago who has been consistently excellent in the Premier League against very tough opposition.

Roses was an excellent trip for the new look York first team. Jonny McWilliams led by example in a dominant performance which York would win 6-2 infront of many football players whose disrespectful opinion of the club would change after witnessing a good physical game, but also a game in which much skill was on offer from the York players (excluding myself obviously!)

Some of the trips that have been made by the club in the last year have been more notable than others - the boys that went to Brno didnt exactly set the World on fire with the results they gained, but John Lewis did make the bbc website! The Edinburgh trip was a success - Scotland beat England in Rugby, Pivot and Derby got drunk as they wished, I slept for less than two hours, and on the pitch we battled our hearts out and made the semis against a first team uni football team who are dominant in their busa league north of the border. And THAT Strathclyde game against that guy with a foot that rivals Thomas Hitzlsperger's 'hammer' was nothing short of spectacular. Lets not forget most of the club piling off to Holland on a trip that has still yet to decide whether its more of a piss-up than it is futsal or the other way round. Both teams did ok, but next year winning the tournament must be the aim. Grimsby was a let-down thanks to Kevin Bryant's ineptitude. Ive probably missed out other trips (such as Rotherham and Teeside?) but thats all I can remember!

Obviously, there was always time for one more seasonal tournament, and due to an interesting seeding system, Vietnam not bothering to turn up on the last day, Cleethorpes team on the second day being vastly inferior, and ABFC being involved, it was a slight let-down for some. However it wasnt for the Anarchy 99 boys who won every single game, and were all honoured to participate in absolute classic of a match on the opening day against TLDOW which ended in 3-2 to Anarchy 99. Special mentions have to go out to James Sweetman who was magnificent for the Dogs in keeping out the unstoppable Depledge for most of the match, and from a personal point of view I have to comment on Owen Grafton who is seriously underated and was absolutely brilliant for the whole tournament (and basically all of the season as well). Anarchy 99 would dominate SKG in a repeat of the final that has been replayed now three times in one season.

The only other thing to really comment on was awards evening in which basically everything went as most would have thought, except for Player of the Year which divided the club. Jonny McWilliams and Roo Wakeford were both deserving of the award, however only one could win, and Roo edged it. Not only does he have lightning fast feet, but he is also a 'do a job' player as well.

This year has seen many ups and downs, but its had the one vital ingredient which makes things entertaining - drama (and Round Dave). Hopefully there will be more of the same next year. Bring on the Freshers i say - we all know how much Pivot likes a bit of fresh meat, and there will be more players who Craddock can shout 'Im inside you' at.

A combination of tiredness and complacency led to a rather poor first half effort from York. A lack of urgency led to Rotherham's distinctive Carlos Valderrama look-a-like (whose name I believe is Hitchen) dictating much of the play without threatening York's goal too much. York needed to be a little more careful than they were with many passes going astray, marking not being tight enough, and a much greater sense of movement was needed to give keeper Stiffel more options.

York proved to have too much quality for Rotherham, particularly upfront, with York's attackers running riot, and York's second defenders Mcwilliams and Tiago in particular joining the attack at every opportunity to punish the slow defence of Rotherham. Although only going in at half time one goal ahead wasn't exactly what York wanted (or expected), York certainly kicked on after the break terrorizing Rotherham with some excellent futsal, which considering they had just been embroiled in a hard battle with Grimsby was all the more impressive.

Rotherham are maybe out of their depth in the Futsal premier league, but too their credit rallied hard against York, and made the game not as one sided as it should have been. However York proved very hungry in the second half for goals with everyone wanting to get on to the score sheet with the exception of the goal keeper and Preston who was happy to do a job at the back (!). Humphreys in particular was launching himself forward, however he was unable to score. However, Mcwilliams did get back on the scoresheet with an excellent strike which brought back memories of the Futsal UY 'glory days'.

FPL - vs. FC Grimsby

University of York 4 - 2 FC Grimsby

Anything less than a victory would have been catastrophic. After a creditable draw with Stormers York had to play back to back games against a strong Grimsby side, and then against a very average Rotherham team. And less than six points would have left York having to worry about their Premier League status as their next two games are against the national champions Doncaster, and many critics favourites to win the League - Santos.

The game began with Grimsby proving to be an extremely well organised side, dominating possession in their half, and in York's half as well. However York defended very well, and goal keeper James Sweetman was only called upon a few times during the opening exchanges. After around seven minutes Mcwilliams made some changes, and immediately things felt fresher on the pitch and the team gelled as all the players know that it can. York began to dictate the game, however York's movement still left a lot to be desired (aside from the imperious Tiago who was magnificent in both games), and as in Yorks previous games, being clinical in front of goal proved problematic. However, Depledge, Yorks most prolific goalscorer, once again proved to be the hero, scoring an excellent goal before half time to send York in at the break 1-0 up, and maybe feeling a tad fortunate.

The second half began fairly well for both teams, with the standard of futsal very high from York, and from Grimsby (a massive area in the Country for Futsal). With Kevin Bryant looking on, Grimsby pushed forward for the equaliser and got what they deserved due to York being very slack from a corner kick. Grimsbys attacker wasn't closed down fast enough on the edge of the area and Sweetman saw it too late to do anything about it.

York once again upped their games after this pushing themselves into a 3-1 lead courtesy off goals from Craddock and an excellent team goal finished off by Tiago. Once again, a lack of closing down men led to another Grimsby goal which gave them hope, although keeper Sweetman probably would have felt that he could have done better with what was a rather speculative effort to say the least. However, as Grimsby pushed men forward York soaked up all the pressure with relative ease and started to attack on the break. They were rewarded with a single goal for their efforts, although they maybe could have scored more.

Futsal Premier League - 25/06/2006

With two matches scheduled one after the other, a slip-up might have been expected. But the first team bagged six points out of six, the first two wins for the team, putting the team on a much healthier seven points with two games remaining.

Alright Lads and Ladettes,

Just a quick reminder that next Tuesday (Week 10) is the End of Year Awards.

Summer Tournament 2006 Review

In the end it was all a big anticlimax. However, the first day provided plenty of thrills. The group of death certainly lived up to his name, and Pepsi showed that there is life without Round Dave, and SKG staring elimination in the face, battled back to draw with a disorganised Vietnam side to qualify yet again for the semi finals. The standard of Futsal certainly wasn't as high as it could have been.

However the Dogs Vs Anarchy 99 match definitely lived up to its billing as 'potential final' material. It was an intense match. After coming back from a goal down twice, Anarchy 99 countered with new signing Owen Grafham (playing in his first tournament) scoring a decisive goal past the heroic James Sweetman. The game which therefore would decide who went through was effectively Dogs vs Cleethorpes, and in an ugly encounter Cleethorpes used their physicality to win the game 2-1.
Cleethorpes would then lose 4-2 to Anarchy 99, who although nowhere near their best, went about their job to get out of a hard group in business-like fashion. ABFC, barely caused a ripple (aside from briefly leading a shambolic Anarchy 99 side 3-2) and went out in the first stage for the second successive tournament.

The other group was certainly much more open. However Pepsi were probably the team of the day on saturday, and SKG showed what a resilient side that they were by drawing 4-4 against Vietnam (which would prove to be the decisive game of their whole tournament) after being 3 goals down. Blades made up the group, and were something of an unknown quantity. After an impressive showing at the spring tournament they should be disappointed at not progressing.

After the first day the top two teams from each group (Anarchy 99 and Cleethorpes, and SKG and Pepsi) split off into a separate group to decide the overall competition, and the bottom two from each group split off to participate in the plate.

The second day of the tournament was frankly shambolic. Vietnam no showing left a sour taste on the plate competition (which Dogs won with some ease), and Cleethorpes turned up with a much weaker side than what they had done on the first day. The standard was also not aided by four Anarchy 99 players and two Cleethorpes players having participated in a College football tournament earlier in the day in the blistering heat.

However, in a mini-upset SKG once again showed their heart by beating a Pepsi team that the day before had beaten them, and also beat the much-weakend Cleethorpes side with relative ease. Pepsi put up a valiant effort against Anarchy 99, but for the third successive tournament Dan Depledge staked his claim for the tournaments best player award and caused much havoc for the Pepsi defence.

In the plate TLDOW found it beat an increasingly weakened ABFC side, and also the Blades to go some way towards making up for their first round exit the day before. However, they will surely be expecting for a better showing in all three tournaments next year.

After beating both Pepsi and Cleethorpes, SKG and Anarchy 99 went head to head again for the third successive final. After winning the first final with relative ease, Anarchy 99 won the last final with almost as much ease. Although having lost some players, SKG proved over the weekend that they were good enough to make the final. Anarchy 99, although not at their best had won every game, however the injuried of Henry Smith and Ollie Webb (who pulled out just before the final) left them with a smaller squad than their captain would have liked. The game kicked off with Anarchy 99 enjoying a lot of the possession, but SKG using the tenacity of Stansfield and the trickery of Lewis to cause much trouble on the break. However, it is Anarchy 99's attack that is their strongest element, and for three tournaments Depledge, Wakeford, and now Grafham have caused chaos for whatever defence they have been up against and this final was no different. Anarchy 99 established a decent lead in the first half, and although SKG rallied, it was maybe a step too far for them after the huge amounts of effort that they had put in during the rest of the weekend. The final score was 8-3. Let the banter commence for the next tournament, and bring on the freshers.

This weekend sees the biggest futsal competition of the year, where 8 proud futsal teams will be battling it out for the title of 'Summer Term Champions'.

Can Anarchy 99 retain the championship or can veterans the Three Legged Dogs of War use their experience and new signings to nick the title? SKG, always a force to be reckoned with cannot be discounted, and will ABFC finally win something? Then there's Yorvik Blades, unpredictable and dangerous to any team, they could cause some upsets. Will PEPSI turn up sans Round Dave? Is Myles really injured? Will the new team Vietnam be the suprise package of the tournament? With all this drama, how can you miss out?! IUTT 2006 Review: University of York

Game 1: Vs (Portuguese Team)

Our first game at IUTT, and therefore many of us didn’t know quite what to expect. We started quite defensively, keeping our shape, tracking our men, and trying to hit them with a direct counter-attacking style. The Portuguese team kept the ball well, but found it difficult to break us down. We had a few chances on the break, without ever looking really like scoring, while at the other end, Scotty produced some excellent saves to keep the score at 0-0. In the end, we were happy with a solid defensive display, which gave us our first point in Holland; although with hindsight we perhaps offered them a tad too much respect.

Final score: 0-0

Game 2: Vs (Berlin Team)

The evening before our game against Berlin, their captain had asked Sarge whether Futsal was played with 5 or 6 men on the pitch. This question which we assumed had been asked in jest, left us wondering what to expect. As the early stages unravelled, we quickly understood that the comment had been made in all sincerity, as the team of Berliners struggled to come to terms with the demands of Futsal. Both their passing and organization seemed poor, and they offered little coming forward. (We later learned that they were a team of footballers put together at the last minute.)York quickly took the lead when Saul made some room for himself before scuffing a shot into the far corner, just beyond the keeper’s outstretched hand. The lead soon doubled as Fooey raced onto headed flick-on and finished emphatically on the volley (off his shin). The rest of the game was somewhat disappointing for York, as they too often looked for the killer pass or the long ball, instead of picking off Berlin with simple passing. Berlin had a few chances to get back into the game but Scotty was equal to them, and kept his second consecutive Futsal clean sheet.

Final Score: 2-0

Game 3: Vs Team Alpha

Unlike their first two games, the Blue team knew exactly what to expect from Team Alpha, a semi-professional Russian club, with excellent IUTT pedigree. We had just watched them play some dazzling Futsal on their way to battering Glamorgan 10-0. Our game-plan was containment. We would wait for them at the half-way line, track our men and see if they could play it through us. This game turned out to be Team Blue’s best performance of the tournament. Our defence proved watertight, we did not let ourselves be overwhelmed by their movement, or skill. On the break we looked dangerous too; their keeper produced two top draw saves, as Ed and Sarge unleashed venomous shots, to keep the score at nil-nil. The crowd began to grow as the game truly seemed to be on. Alpha took the lead however when a split second of lax marking left one of their players free. He duly finished, underlying once more the quality of the opposition. With the game still in the balance Saul won the ball in his own box, turned, and began to run (in his own trademark head-down style). He skipped past a couple of players before completely fluffing his shot, a disappointing anti-climax, but one that still brought a rousing cheer from the crowd and York bench. The game, as a contest, ended soon after when a Russian player unleashed an unstoppable shot into the corner beyond Scotty’s reach. The defeat was a victory for the York boys however who had put in a fantastic team display, and ruffled a few of the giant Russians’ (literally) feathers.

Final Score: 0-2

Game 4: Vs Glamorgan

This game turned out to be the one of the most controversial games of the whole tournament. Glamorgan were not as we had expected a team of friendly Welshmen but in fact a team of angry Italians and Shoaib Ahktar look-a-like. One of their players in particular, Number 10, seemed to represent all of the worst qualities of the continental footballer: needless showboating, diving, play-acting, useless tricks, a dirty mouth, and ugliness. From the opening minutes, he cranked the temperature up a notch on Pitch 2 by remonstrating angrily with Webby after an innocuous challenge. There then followed ten minutes of chaotic Futsal with Webby and Scotty doing their best to keep Glamorgan’s attacks at bay. Saul had the best chance of the game, when he controlled a delightful long ball from Ben, skipped past the keeper before shooting off-balance and seeing his shot thunder against the post. The game continued in a similar vein, with York unable to grab the game by the scruff of the neck, until the referee, annoyed by the persistent fouling and moaning of number 10, yellow-carded him. The crowd erupted, and cheered whole-heartedly as the most hated player of the tournament trudged off. York pressed home their one man advantage, and took the lead when Fooey side-footed home coolly after a delicate pull-back. With the game still in the balance, and only minutes left to play, Glamorgan, back to full strength, began to press forward in search of an equaliser. It was at this stage that the game forever entered the domain of Futsal folklore in terms of controversy. As a York attack breaks down, Ed, realizing that we are outnumbered at the back produces a crafty piece of gamesmanship, sticking his hand out and blocking Glamorgan’s ball forward. To the surprise of everyone in the arena, no whistle sounds, and as the Glamorgan keeper rushes out to take the free kick, Ben serenely slots the ball into the empty net. The ref points to the centre circle, and chaos ensues. An already heated game explodes with Glamorgan players begin shouting at everyone, the ref, his assistant, our players, as Ed somewhat sheepishly jogs back to the half-way line. After a few minutes of delay, play starts again, with Glamorgan down to three players, (Number 10 having been giving his marching orders for the second time in the game) and the final whistle blows soon after. A dramatic game came to a close, with York taking all the points, but arguments and discussions would continue well after the final whistle had gone.

Final Score: 2-0

Game 5: Vs Connolly’s Irish Pub

After the draining games against teams Alpha and Glamorgan, this game against a talented team of Frenchmen from Marseille (with both Bodo and Myles look-alikes) was always going to be a struggle. From the word go, York’s blue team were on the back foot. Our passing was off and we struggled to deal with their movement. They went ahead quickly, and soon doubled their lead, as our previously solid defence suddenly seemed out of sorts. The mistakes multiplied and before long we were four down and facing humiliation. Ben pulled a goal back, finishing coolly after a neat swivel, and in the dying seconds, the Bodo look-alike (complete with Jamaica shirt) brought down Saul in the box. Sarge, still on a duck for the tournament, snatched the ball from Saul’s hand, stepped up to take it, but was unable to beat Bodo 2.

Final Score: 1-4

This defeat to the French meant that they pipped us to second place in the group, and therefore denied the Blues, by one point, a place in the top eight. Finishing on 7 points, York’s Blues nonetheless guaranteed themselves a 9-16th place finish after an action-packed and highly enjoyable first day.

Game 6: Vs Brno

Saturday morning found York Blue in below-par condition, to say the least. While most of the team were nursing hangovers and suffering from lack of sleep, Sarge and Saul were still in an Eindhoven hospital, for Saul’s hand injury, five minutes before kick-off. Enough of excuses though! Brno were by far the better team throughout, and ended up giving York the Blues (see what I did there!). York failed to get anywhere near the dizzying levels of sexual Futsal that they had showed on Friday, as Brno easily knocked four past them. Nuff said.

Game 7: Vs Totelos

This game against the tournament organizers was one that York really should have won. Totelos were by no means class A opposition, as the Oranges had proved by dominating most of their game against them before beating them on penalties. The Blues were once more out of sorts, and fell behind early. Sarge equalized on the volley, however, and the game seemed ours for the winning. We fell behind again, however, with more lax defending. At this stage we threw the kitchen sink at Totelos, Webster hit the post with a Futsal Header, Sarge and Saul both produced good saves from the keeper. When one of their players was sin-binned, we thought we could finally break through, but to their credit they held their shape well and there was no way back.

Final Score: 1-2

Game 8: Vs York Rye

By this stage, after a string of bad results, we were desperately looking for a win, to rescue a bit of pride for the mighty Blues. When the draw tossed up York Rye, one of our arch rivals, we knew that this game would mean a lot more than just the 15th spot (not really, but it makes it sound more dramatic). The Blues found their form in this game, finally finding some attacking flair and creating some chances. We took the lead when Saul poked the ball through a crowd of players into the net from a corner. The game was full of end-to-end stuff, and would have been pleasant viewing, had anyone been in the crowd (apart from our number one supporters, of course: the Oranges). Ben doubled the lead from a yard out after a pull-back, and the Blues looked on their way. York Rye pulled one back however, when one of their strikers megged Scotty (sorry mate), and began to apply some real pressure. York defended valiantly however, and in the dying seconds, after a corner for which their keeper had come up, Sarge chipped into an empty net from inside his own half, guaranteeing the Blues 15th spot. Get in you beauty!!

Futsal UY – A Captain’s Review

Futsal UY boasted a small but strong squad featuring a combination of experienced players and newbies led by the combined might (or should I say weight) of Manager Sound/Hagel Slag/ Round/ Dave and Captain Dan ‘The Doctor’ Depledge.

Upon leaving for Robin Hood airport at the ungodly hour of 2am, few of the members of Futsal UY would have had any idea of the futsalling events that would shape their next few days. After a period of 48 hours with little or no sleep, a lot of drinking and being drawn into a tough group, Futsal UY knew they had their work cut out for them if they were going to achieve their aim of a top 12 placing.

Two tough opening games against Lisboa and the University of Rostok resulted in two 1-1 draws with Mark ‘The Pivot’ McKay and Dan getting the goals. Both games were tight affairs but in the end Futsal UY probably deserved a win in both games.

After a short break admiring the jailbait Ukrainian ladies team, Futsal UY would face their toughest match so far against the IUTT hosts Totelos A team (from the Dutch premier league). UY went down 2-0 but Totelos were made to work very hard for the points.

With hangovers rapidly receding and the awesome might of the Hagel Slag kicking in, Futsal UY perked up and their next opponents EU PHF were taken apart 4-2 with highlights including 2 individual goals from Dan, a goal of the tournament from Mike ‘Ibra-mike-ovic’ Clarke (A scorpion kick that had to be seen to be believed), and a typical toe-punt from UY’s very own Dutchman, Ties. This win put UY in a great position in the group and hopes for finishing second were high.

The dream was soon dashed in a highly controversial game between Totelos and Lisbon. UY need Lisbon to lose in order to progress to second, but a combination of terrible time wasting and a last minute totelos goal being disallowed because the ref didn’t see it go in, resulted in a 1-1 draw leaving UY with a meaningless final game.

The last game against HEC finished 3-3 with Dan and Pivot (2) getting on the goalsheet again. UY finished fourth in the group and progressed into the 9-16th playoff. It was tough on the UY players who had put in powerful, disciplined performances but such is life in futsal.

The next day saw a very very hungover UY thrown against the Dutch Totelos B team who thankfully were nearly as hungover. A blistering first minute twice saw Dan (powered by the ubiquitous Hagel Slag) round the Totelos team and slot home. This lead would prove to be crucial as Totelos gradually got back in the game finally securing a 2-2 draw, partly due to a horrendous defensive lapse by Paddy (who would later redeem himself). And so it was that UY headed to the terrifying and oh-so-english prospect of a penalty shootout!

Winning the toss, UY elected the other team to shoot first and it was joy all round as Sound Dave made a terrific dive and save. Captain Doctor Dan stepped up for UY and coolly slotted his penalty home, sending the keeper the wrong way. Totelos powered home an unstoppable shot for their next penalty before Pivot followed suit, nearly decapitating the totelos goalkeeper who just managed to get out of the way. Totelos scored their final penalty heaping pressure on the shoulders of former president Paddy Drysdale who was to take UY’s third and final penalty. After placing the ball and taking two steps back, Paddy took a moment to compose himself. Then, disaster!!! The referee blew up ruling that Paddy had taken more than the allotted 4 seconds (a rule none of us knew!) in which to take the penalty. A huge debate with the referee and the Totelos team seemed destined to end the game on controversial note. Paddy;s blushes were spared when the terrifically sporting Totelos team insisted he be allowed another go. The referee agreed and this time Paddy made sure, driving home his penalty and sending UY through into the 9-12 playoff.

This would be the last action of the day for UY who took a trip to Amsterdam in an effort to calm their nerves…

The final days play saw UY paired with a team from Brno (A place with difficult memories for many of the Futsal UY team). Determined to prove their worth, UY took an early lead thanks to a slick one-two with Ties and finish from Dan. However disaster soon struck as a badly taken corner (from Dan) resulted in a Brno player running the length of the field and scoring. Two more quickly followed and it was looking like it would be a bad day for UY. However, once again they dug deep and a couple of great goals from Ties and Pivot restored the balance, although UY quickly found themselves another goal behind after that. With mere seconds left, UY secured the draw thanks to another impressive run and finish from Dan.

And so UY found themselves in another shootout… Determined to show the England team how it was done UY put away their initial three penalties with ease (Dan, Pivot and Paddy again). However the expertise of the Brno team saw them match UY. And so to sudden death and with Brno taking the lead it was up to Sound Dave to keep UY in it. Up he stepped for his penalty and expertly placed it into the top corner, much to the joy of the many supporting teams who had been enjoying the game (particularly Team Alpha). The next Brno player was unfortunate to steer his shot onto the post having sent the keeper the wrong way but this was to be a great UY moment as Sebastian ‘Seb’ Groth stepped up to his first top-level penalty. He slotted it home and UY went crazy, after a disappointing first day they had guaranteed themselves a top 10 finish, a fantastic achievement. The final game for 9th and 10th saw UY up against familiar foes in the shape of UEA. However the stress of the penalty shootout and the lack of recovery time between the games saw UY lose out on the bragging rights.
The game itself started badly when a horrible defensive lapse from Dan allowed UEA to take an early lead. Four more goals quickly followed and UY were in disarray. However, a mad 3 minutes saw Dan score a hat-trick and was nearly enough to take the game back to UEA. Unfortunately another UEA goal sealed the deal and the game finished 6-3.

Despite a disappointing end to a terrific tournament, UY should hold their heads high at their achievements. One can only drool at the prospect of how the current first team could fare there next year.

All in all it was a great tournament organised by a fantastic group of lads and brilliant collection of teams. Every member of UY played their part from the goalkeeping heroics and motivation of Sound Dave, the defensive organisation and sheer britishness of Paddy, the sheer energy, constant running and defending by Seb, Ties’ reading of the game and ability to dictate the game. The tireless work of Luke who was unfortunate not to score and the sheer effort of the utility man, Mike, played a huge part in their success as did the goals from Pivot (4) and Dan (11).

As captain I would like to thank everyone for their efforts and for making the trip so unforgettable and enjoyable.

In a tournament which was a follow-up the the York-Rye tournament for York-based teams, York-Rye invited York University, Rotherham Athletic, and Norwich Union, winners of the York League, to play a competetive tournament of futsal. York University came in captained by Jonny MacWilliams, and looked to win the whole tournament outright. They had a tough slate, going up against Rotherham in the tournament opener, and then with only 1 game to rest, had York-Rye and Norwich Union in consecutive matches. The team was notwithstanding ready for the challenge.

The first game began rather tensely, with Rotherham and York trying to find their footing. However some immaculate passing on the part of York led to an early lead featuring a goal by Sebastian Groth. York University continued to apply the pressure, and with goals coming from captain Jonny and Andy 'Roo' York University kept control of the match. Rotherham were able to get 2 goals back, but good defending from Ben Cowley kept the attacks at bay. York displayed some superb finishing, including the true highlight, where keeper Dennis Stiffel lobbed the ball the length of the pitch to striker Dan Depledge who first-timed it into the back of the net. Despite a few rocky moments, York University was able to secure a 7-2 victory over Rotherham.

The team went over to the side-pitch between the games to play 'Hit the keeper' in an unusual act of cruelty. Keeper James 'Sweetman' was stood in a five-a-side goal, being pelted at from all sides by all players involved. The team was just getting ready for the next two games.

York-Rye, during this warm-up, had managed to beat Norwhich Union 6-5 in a hard-fought game. Looking to continue their good form, they started off the game against York University very strongly. York needed commanding performances from 'Roo' and 'Daisy' in defence, and the energy of strikers Saul and Sarge was a much needed factor in keeping York looking sharp. A few unlucky misses on one end, and a few good strikes on the other saw York down 3-1. However, refusing to give up, York relied on solid defence in the back from Daisy and Seb, while the attacking powers of Saul, Sarge, Henry, Dan and Owen forced the York-Rye team to make save after save, and kept them under constant pressure. With a last-minute scramble for the ball, Owen was able to hammer home the game-winner, much to the cheers of his fellow team-mates. Jonny came into the game, and along with 'Daisy' closed out the game in fine form, not even allowing York-Rye a shot at equalizing.

With only a few minutes to change over, York University had to quickly settle from their enthralling come-from-behind victory over York-Rye and focus again on the task at hand, facing a rested Norwich Union squad. The game started very physically, with a number of hard-hits on the strikers, and a few tough tackles needed from Captain Jonny and Seb. After a few empty possessions and a couple close chances from both sides, Norwich struck first, with a solid left-footed shot which just managed to beat 'Sweetman.' Not one to back down, York responded with an energetic goal by Owen to keep the game close. Norwich Union scored again to go up one. Jonny showed everyone why he's got one of the strongest shots in the club, first-timing a quick pass from Seb, smashing it into the top-left corner with such force as to rock the goal back. Norwich Union however proved they had something left, and managed to get a 3-2 lead, which while York were chasing, they managed to increase to 4-2. York's striking force saw many close chances and great shots and runs from Saul and Sarge, nearly getting the equalizer. It would prove to be too little too late, as it were. Despite playing some excellent Futsal, York fell to 2-1 in the tournament, and had to rely on other games to have a chance of winning.

It was however, not to be. With York-Rye beating Rotherham, and Norwhich Union doing the same, it came down to Goal Difference, where York would finish as runners-up with Norwich Union winning it.

Overall however, it was a great day of futsal, with good things happening in both attack and defence for York University, who can be proud with their outing.

Roses 2006

Lancaster University 2 - 6 University of York

It was never going to be easy. Despite the fact that there were no points involved (a problem that really needs to be rectified), and Lancaster not having a futsal team (they put out a side who on the following day would face York's football team), any event at Roses means a great deal. There was pride at stake, and with many people watching the game from York and Lancaster, all the players from both sides were determined to put in a good performance.

It was a shaky start from both teams, however Lancaster's physicality was giving York many problems, which eventually led to a goal for Lancaster. York hit back straight away, with some excellent passing and moving leading to an equaliser. Still the first half was proving a tense affair, but right at the death Lancaster broke from defence into attack, and York were left in a two on one situation which happened too often in the first half, and Lancaster scored to go 2-1 ahead at half time.

The second half began in a much more positive manner for York, with their hardwork finally gaining the reward it deserved with an equalising goal. Recently the York first team has been reshuffled, so many at Roses weren't used to playing with each other. However, as the match went on, all of the players involved became more at ease with each other, and found themselves ahead 5-2 with Henry Smith completing an excellent performance with a hat trick, and 'Captain Fantastic' himself Jonny Mcwilliams scoring a goal. This was much to the delight of the away fans who all witnessed a typically reliable and hardworking performance from the captain.

Lancaster found themselves becoming increasingly frustrated with Yorks ability to keep the ball and basically pass it around them for long spells which had the crowd chanting everytime a pass was completed. Saul Hubbard found himself on the end of some frankly horrific tackles, but nothing would ruin York Futsal Club's day. The second half had been so one sided that the scoreline flattered Lancaster, and the game was rounded off right at the death with York scoring a 6th goal to win the game 6-2.

FPL - vs. Sheffield Stormers

For the first time this season captain Jonny Mcwilliams went into todays game with nearly a full compliment of players to pick from. However, no one was under the illusion that this would be an 'easy' game, as York were up against a team who have already beaten last years national champions Doncaster not once, but twice. What a time for York to step up and show some of the talent that they have. It was vital after two disappointing displays for York to get a win, and unfortunately that didn't happen. But there were certainly more positives to be taken from this game than the previous two Futsal Premier League matches that they have been involved in.

Mcwilliams started with a 2-2 formation with himself and Preston at the back, and Wakeford and Depledge upfront. Maybe York gave the otherside too much respect, however simple passing at the back and patience led to York creating openings and the 1-0 lead that they took inside ten minutes was richly deserved. This was due to a lot of hard work, as there is no doubt that the Stormers were playing their socks off as well. They defended extremely compactly as a four, making sure that whenever York pushed on that they had four men behind the ball. No doubt this will become a feature of the teams that York play at this high level, and something that as an attacking force York can learn to break down better.

Unfortunately the lead wasnt to last, and it was a cruel blow that Stormers goal came from a chance that Depledge 9 times out of 10 would have scored. It was created by excellent work from the returning Owen Grafton, however within 10 seconds of that chance Stormers had equalised. Defensively York had been caught flat footed, and it was certainly a blow considering York had dominated in terms of possession before the goal.

However, no one in the York camp let their heads drop, and both teams infact continued to play good futsal when they had the ball, and defended excellently when they didn't. To say the first half was 'tight' would be an understatement. And even though York had more of the ball, both teams had chances and the score being 1-1 at half time was probably a fair reflection.

In the second half what York seemed to lack was 'that' killer ball in terms of decision making at the vital moment when York moved forward. Killer instinct infront of goal seems to be something that York as a team need to work on. The defenders need to move the ball out as accurately as they did in the game today, but faster, and the attackers need to find their shooting boots for York to succeed in this league, and the overall performance today shows that is possible without a shadow of a doubt.

Although not his busiest day, James Sweetman continued to pay back the faith that has been shown in him by Mcwilliams to put him in the first team with yet another assured display between the goal posts, and some pivotal saves which didn't make the scoreline go against York. Much the same though, it has to be mentioned that his adversary in the Stormer's goal made some excellent saves to keep our York, however with the amount of possession York had they could maybe have threatened more.

The second half was played out much in the same vein as the first - a very high standard of futsal on offer from both sides, in a very tight half, with York having more of the possession but not really able to capitalise. Overall this is certainly York's best performance in the premier league, however the results don't lie and one point from a possible nine simply isn't good enough. Although everyone from the York team should be pleased with their performances today, no one should be overjoyed with a 1-1 draw against a team who despite their undoubted class, York should have and could have beaten.

York Mini Tournament Review

An excellent victory in this tournament for Futsal UY and their new captain Daniel Webster. It was all the more encouraging with only two recognised forwards playing, that Webster was able to integrate Nicklaus and Humphrey's successfully into the attack, despite the fact that both are generally more effective in defence.

Yorkvic Blades, sporting some old faces provided a stern test in the first game. Chances were hard to come by, mainly due to both sides defending very well. In net for Futsal UY due to the absence of Martin Buck, the often undervalued Round Dave did a competent job whenever called upon in goal, and was excellent vocally in helping out a new team who are still gelling know where they should be and what they should be doing on the pitch.

Although certainly not the 'game of the century', the 3-1 scoreline at the end of this match was probably fair, but still left me thinking that Webster needs to resolve the problem of where goals are going to come from in his team. However, I would be made to eat my words after the second match against a Yorkrye side who seem as though theyre in a transitional period.

The second match, played directly after the first gave a clear sense that the players immediately were getting used to each other, and 'El Matador' in particular looked as though he was enjoying playing again, which is fantastic news for the captain, who desperately needs a 'wild card' like Ken to create things for a Futsal UY side lacking experience within their squad, and maybe creativity. Ken tortured Yorkrye, and linked up well with whoever he was playing with. Although Yorkrye showed glimpses of the form that once took them to the national championships, Websters men were never in trouble. Futsal UY at points showed fluid passing and moving, and a good starting point for moves to come from came in the form of Groth, who did the simple things well, and led by example at the back. Two excellent goals from one of Websters new recruits to futsal Rob 'Robinho' Saunders, and a fantastic display from Round Dave are more examples of why this was certainly an encouraging tournament for the captain and his team. Final score 6-3.

In the final game of the tournament, Yorvic Blades took on Yorkrye in a match that highlighted how far the Blades have come in recent times, and with improved levels of fitness could certainly go even further and achieve credible results in the infamous York league. Certainly with York old boys Derby pulling the strings at the back, and Swamp showing how technically there are very few players at the club who are better than him, Yorvic Blades should get better and better. Although they were superior to Yorkrye for long periods of their match, fitness and concentration lapses led to their demise and they went down 6-5. With more clinical finishing the result could have been a lot different.

Scottish Uni's Futsal Tournament at Heriot-Watt

York University took a very strong line-up to Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, with a combination of young and hungry new faces, and more experienced old heads. However, before the actual tournament, Club President Patrick Drysdale had booked the team a training session with Mark Potter and a team of his finest players. Potter is the leading authority on Futsal in Scotland, and is also it's driving force, as well as being the pivotal player in his own team. Tang Hall seemed a long way away when York's Futsal Team stepped on to the turf for the training session, the artificial grass and much larger pitch being unfamiliar territory for most of the team. After a few drills the team was thrown into a training match with Potter's finest, and although showed some resilience towards the end of the first half to bring the score back to 4-4, tired legs in the second half, coupled with the implementation of a 1-2-1 system which many of Drysdale's Futsal UY team weren't used to, led to a comprehensive defeat and a worried team ahead of the Tournament.

After Dundee pulled out on the morning of the tournament (maybe due to a famous Scottish victory in the rugby and the aftermath) there was a long wait for the groups to be reorganised, and a longer wait for York to even get on the pitch to play. Right from the off it was very apparent that, much like the first ever York University Futsal Open, the standard was extremely high among most teams that were participating. York's first match was against Heriot-Watt seconds, who should have been one of the favourites considering they were used to the surface. Immediately they showed their attacking prowess by scoring an early goal, however it became clear that defensively they were nowhere near as strong, allowing the 'pivots' Depledge and Mckay to dominate from the front and help York to a victory which was a lot more routine than the 3-2 scoreline suggested.

The second game of the tournament was, to put it mildly, a nightmare for York. After scoring an early goal, a relatively weak Stirling side dominated a York outfit that simply weren't able to settle down after wholesale changes were made during the match. It seemed as though complacency had set in, and 4-1 was more flattering to York than Stirling, it was a poor performance by York over all areas of the pitch. No doubt attitudes and performances had to change if progression to the latter stages of the tournament was to happen, as in the next match they faced an exceptionally fit and gifted Strathclyde side, who over the course of the day would earn the respect of all the teams that were there, principally for only bringing FIVE players with them – and no sign of a proper kit either!

Wilson decided to start with Preston as anchorman, Mcwilliams and Wakeford on either wing, and Mckay as the all-important pivot. The game itself was extremely hard-fought with Strathclydes exceptional movement on and off the ball, unable to break down a resilient York University outfit. However, a goal went in – and for the wrong team. Heads didn't drop in the York camp though, spurred on by an ill Daniel Webster and Club President Patrick Drysdale from the sidelines, York battled and scrapped for every inch of their lives, knowing a loss would probably end their dreams of progressing, and great work from Mckay earned him a much deserved goal against the goalkeeper who would later be voted player of the tournament. Strathclyde pushed hard for another goal, but fantastic defending from all of the team saw out a 1-1 draw which was possibly the best result of the whole tournament for York in context of how good the opposition were.

In the final game of the group stages York found themselves reacquainted with old foes UEA, themselves in a strong position to qualify, both sides went all out for a win right from the off, however York, starting with same the four who started against Strathclyde, were the sharper of the two teams. The all-important first goal came in exceptional circumstances. Futsal UY's leading goalscorer Mcwilliams hammered a shot towards goal, and the crafyt Scotsman Mckay got a touch which totally fooled the goalkeeper. One-Nil York. The inevitable happened, UEA went all out in attack, and only some resolute defending and great saves from Martin Buck stopped the equaliser. However, late in the game a mix up with regards to a substitution led to an untracked UEA player to score a goal for UEA, but once again York showed their resilience, or should I say Daniel Depledge did, as his quick feet saw him basically take the ball from kick-off and score. Final score: 2-1 York, and a place in the semi finals against an Edinburgh outfit who had won every game in the group and condemned Yorks local rivals Teeside to 2nd position and a semi-final against Strathclyde that they would lose 1-0.

After a break, which in hindsight seemed to be too short for York's tired legs, the game began and Edinburgh's passing and movement, as well as individual skill ranked alongside that of Strathclyde. However, they had more options on the bench, and seeked to take advantage of a tired York team. This they did, but in slightly unlucky circumstances. Having tracked the Edinburgh attacker, Preston put a foot in, only for the ball to deflect around Martin Buck for the first goal. Another goal quickly followed, and then a mix-up between Mcwilliams and Preston led to a third. However, York rallied, and the score didn't reflect what had been happening on the pitch, and York got a goal back following some lengthy periods of possession. However, Wilson's failure to track a runner led to a fourth goal which ended York's momentum and also the match. Edinburgh would go on to beat a shattered Strathclyde side 3-1 in the final.

A semi-final appearance was certainly a creditable result for York, but with fresher legs and greater concentration it could have been a better result, perhaps even a win. York showed that it could compete with extremely gifted teams, and although there are lessons to be learned from the tournament, there were many good things to take from it as well.

PWC York Futsal Open: Plucky York Sides Denied as Doncaster Triumph!

The inaugural PWC York Futsal Open was a roaring success as National Champions Doncaster College for Deaf proved their pedigree by winning the tournament with a 100% record. Futsal, is the only recognised small sided game by FIFA. Played with a smaller size four ball and in hockey nets, Futsal is a game designed to improve a player’s skill and technique, with its origins in Brazil, players such as Ronaldinho and Pele have credited the game with being key to helping them dominate world football, during their careers.

The York Futsal Club, is the oldest university Futsal Club, however the York Futsal Open was the first time the club has hosted such a tournament. Club President Patrick Drysdale said, “I am hoping that this tournament can raise the profile of the club on campus and of Futsal across the North, this sport just keeps growing and I hope this tournament plays a part in its future development.” The club certainly put in an incredible effort, with 8 guest teams, including National Champions Doncaster being invited, as well as teams from across the North of England and a select side from the Perth in Scotland. A carnival atmosphere was provided by the club who had hired out all three pitches in the new sports tent and a PA system, to keep fans and players entertained during breaks. Support from the A.U and the Sports Centre Staff were crucial in making this tournament happen and the club have asked us to thank them both for the support they offered during the planning of the tournament.

The action on the pitch did not let down those who had come to watch with an incredibly high standard. The York 1st team had arguably the toughest task, in Pool B, they faced some stiff competition. In their first clash against Rotherham Futsal Club, the 1st team opened up an early 2-0 lead, including a smashing goal from David Craddock, however, a few moments of madness cost York dearly and Rotherham pulled the scores level at half time. York responded well and went back into the lead only to concede a late equaliser to see the game finish 3-3. Their second game proved to be a disappointing show, as they were beaten by a confident looking Grimsby select side, going down by 5-3. However, the amazing team spirit and character of the York side shone through as they then defeated rivals UEA by 4-2. The York team took a 3-0 lead with some clinical finishing, a great strike from David Craddock and a fine finish from Saul Hubbard two highlights. UEA quickly got back into it with two quick goals and it took some fine defending from Daniel Webster and Sebastian Groth in particular to allow York to hold on for a memorable victory! This set up a classic finale to the group between Teesside University and York University, both sides needing a win to guarantee them a place in the final four alongside U.E.A! It was Teesside who got into their rhythm first and by half time their quick passing game had rewarded them with a 3-0 lead. However, once again York showed their battling spirit and scored two second half goals to set up a tense finish, Teesside just held on to win the group on goal difference, the York firsts however, can take massive pride from their performance.

In the other group the York Second Team, led by President Patrick Drysdale looked in confident mood in qualifying for the semi finals, only dropping points in one game, a defeat to National Champions Doncaster, for whom Daniel Hogan was in fine form. York goalkeeper Martin Buck was the hero late on against Perth Select when he saved a penalty, by virtue of this York went on to win 8-6 and qualify for the semi finals, where they met Teesside. In another classic match, Teesside qualified for the final winning by 6-5, however, the score only tells half the story. York having got the score back to 2-2 had a mini crisis at the start of the second half and Teesside took full advantage to go 6-2 up. This sparked a brilliant revival from York and their three forwards, Grafton, Depledge and Wakefield all linked brilliantly to get York back into the game, with the score at 6-5, an incredible double save, denied the impressive Myles Preston from sending the game into a penalty shoot out. Teesside held on to reach the final where they would meet Doncaster who beat UEA 5-2 in the second semi final. Both York teams gave a fantastic account of themselves and their performance only made the tournament even more memorable.

The final was a fitting end to a brilliant tournament, the Doncaster side, consisting entirely of deaf players came through to win it by 6-2 a notable hat-trick from Doncaster star Daniel Hogan who eventually won the golden boot award was the highlight of a well contested final. The Teesside team can take great credit and pride from their performance as they helped to create a brilliant atmosphere bringing over 30 fans and players to the tournament. This year’s tournament was a raging success and plans are already afoot for next years tournament, Club President Patrick Drysdale said, “I am delighted with this year’s tournament, I know some of the guys on the committee are looking to expand the tournament next year to a whole weekend.” So the curtain was brought down on a fine tournament, the York Futsal Club has made many friends across the futsal community with this tournament and one can only hope this will help to improve the club.

PRESS RELEASE – 15/02/2006 - YORK UNIVERSITY HOLDING MAJOR FUTSAL TOURNAMENT THIS SATURDAY (18th Feb)

The inaugural PWC York University Annual Futsal Open will take place this Saturday, with nine of the top teams in the country being represented plus a Perth Youth Select team. Current National Champions Doncaster Deaf will be pre-tournament favourites; however, they face stiff competition from several other sides, including Teesside University, a Grimsby select side and both the York University sides. The tournament will be split into two groups of 5 with the top two advancing from each group into semi – finals and a final. Club President and Tournament Director, Paddy Drysdale says “The tournament represents a great opportunity for our teams to compete against the best teams in the UK and for people new to the game to watch Futsal at a high level.”

Futsal is the FIFA and UEFA recognised form of small-sided football. The game is however relatively new to England but the FA are working hard on bringing it up to speed with our European Counterparts. Dermot Collins, FA National Development Manager said: "Futsal is steadily gaining recognition as the best form of small-sided football in this country. It is ideal in the development of young players, but it is enjoyed by millions of people of all ages across the world.”

Futsal gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil and its supporters claim that the skill developed in this game is visible in the technique of players such as Pele, Zico, Socrates, Bebeto, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos. While Brazil continues to be the Futsal hub of the world, the game is now played, under the auspices of FIFA, all over the world. The end-to-end, non-stop, goalmouth action has proven a hit with the fans as the number of professional leagues in the world game grows every year. Russia, Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Japan and Argentina all have professional leagues along with Spain, the current World Champions, whose league regularly attracts over thirty thousand spectators a week to it’s games.

Two teams featuring prominently in the York tournament, the University of York and the University of Teesside both competed in a UEFA sanctioned tournament in Brno in January with the final being televised live. Along with this Futsal has a national TV deal in Spain and several Eastern European Countries. It would seem that Britain is not far behind in embracing the game with a National Premier league being launched in a month with York University competing.

The quality of the teams and the fast-paced excitement of the game will be evident during the tournament, which will take place on Saturday 18th February from 12:30 to 18:00 in York University’s newly developed Sports Centre. Spectators are more than welcome and entrance will be free. Dave Godfrey, Tournament Secretary and Press & Publicity rep “hopes to see the event become a regular fixture in the GB Futsal calendar”.

PRESIDENTS WEEKEND 2006

A brilliant weekend saw the University of York combine futsal with a festival atmosphere and give the new tent a real treat that everyone will remember for a long time. Seeing the debut of York’s 3rd team and the first appearance for ex-president Lilly and his old boy’s the weekend was bound to be a classic.

The first set of games saw, Lilly’s old boys take on the York 1st team. The game although started with at a great pace, a clear weakness in Lilly’s team soon emerged, the fact that they had a squad solely containing strikers. With the score at 6-3 at half time, the York 1sts began to show the advantage of training every week and having a large squad cruising to a 13-4 victory. On the other pitch veteran sides, led by Pizzley and Kermit played out an absolute classic. Pizzley’s side took a half time lead of 3-1, partly thanks to their goalkeeper making some outstanding sides and some fine finishing. However, half time saw Kermit making a tactical change worked perfectly, seeing Slav come out onto pitch, his extra energy saw Kermit’s side move into another gear, scoring 7 second half goals, to win 8-4.

The second set of games saw a tired Lilly led team destroyed by a resurgent Pizzley side, as Lilly and co. were destroyed by 14-2. On the other pitch the York 3rd team were making their debut cheered on by the 1st team with great passion. A superb performance from the 3rd team followed, with the Beard calmly slotting home a one on one past RD. Futsal UY bombarded the 3rds with constant pressure, however debutant keeper James made several superb saves and Futsal UY also contributed, spurning several excellent chances, however the 3rds were always a danger on the break with RD making several good saves from Tiago and Chad. Futsal UY finally equalised just before half time. The second half continued in the same vain and Futsal UY took the lead from the penalty spot. This galvanised the 3rds who controversially equalised when Tiago slid Mike to send Beard clean through who once again showed superb composure to level the scores. The thirds then added 2 goals in 2 minutes, through captain Louis, a brilliant ball from Tiago saw Louis unmarked to score a superb diving FUTSAL HEADER! Louis then added his second as he intercepted a pass and blasted the ball past RD. Futsal UY through all they could but some brilliant defending and great goalkeeping saw Futsal UY only pull one goal back and the full time whistle saw the 3rds win their first ever game.

After the shock of this result Futsal UY got going against Kermit’s team taking a 7-1 lead into the second half after some clinical finishing and several top saves from RD to keep the score down. Futsal UY went on to win 9-5, a magical goal from the halfway line by Quiche capping a superb game. The thirds went into battle with the 1sts and once again displayed a fantastic spirit, taking the lead early doors an equaliser on the brink of half time allowed the 1sts to go in all square. The thirds, playing back to back games, however once again took the lead and looked like they could shock the futsal world with wins over the 1sts and 2nds, however, the 1sts grabbed an equaliser and when Beard missed a late chance, both sides had to be content with a draw. The first day of York 3rd’s proved to be a highly memorable affair as they showed the true strength in depth that the club has, a big mention to new goalkeeper James who performed superbly and put his name in the hat for one of the two coveted goalkeeping positions.
The final game of day 1 saw a high scoring battle between president sides led by Lilly and Kermit. A close encounter was eventually won by Kermit’s side by 11-8, a fine finish to a brilliant day’s futsal. What follows however could be hard reading for a certain current performance, after his sensational antics in Brno; Patrick Drysdale knew that his actions on a night out would be heavily under scrutiny from the national media. The night started off in fine form, with six generations of Futsal packing out the club’s sponsor the Artful Dodger, the drink was flowing as players old and current exchanged stories of futsal legend, (well maybe not but hey it sounds pretty good.) An impromptu award ceremony followed, with 3 dirty half pints being awarded, to joint players of the day Louis and Beard and one for the best newcomer of Women’s Futsal, (a big hand must go to H and Kirtstin who appear to be turning the club around and may their success continue.) The dirty pints, which surely will now be known as the ‘Futsal Pint’ contained

A big hand must go to all 3 winners, with not one vomiting incident reported. The night soon saw club member’s move across York, with the vast majority ending up in the Gallery, Drysdale was truly in heaven hundreds of scantily clad drunken girls provided Drysdale with the opportunity to once again pull of the heroic offside dance. With many player’s soon after retiring to their beds in preparation for the following days matches, Drysdale led the club’s hardcore element to a local hostel, where they kept the bar open until 6am with a heavy drinking system, returning legend Bear was also a ringleader of this incident, which saw Tiago and Derby completely out of it by 5am (passed out in the bar!) sadly Tiago did not repeat his infamous bin incident of 2005.

The final day’s action kicked off with a big grudge match, York 1sts v Futsal UY. The pre match build up, was covered in controversy, when Futsal UY ‘keeper Martin Buck, no showed, having last been seen in the men’s toilets and having not been contacted as of yet, a scandal doesn’t seem far away! With this in mind, Futsal UY summoned RD from his bed, suffering from a severe hangover! The game kicked off with Myles filling in the Futsal UY net, the York 1sts, took full advantage of this situation, including a stunning strike from Saul. RD arrived half way through the 1st half and his first action was to divert a great strike from Daisy into the path of Sarge who calmly slotted home to make it 4-1. Futsal UY had a mountain to climb, Seb soon tested RD with a great long range strike, tipped agonisingly around the post, Futsal UY slowly got into their stride and pulled a goal back just before half time through Ed, who made a great dart from defence to steer home the ball past Bodo for 4-2. The second half was a classic, with Futsal UY pushing for the two goals they needed whilst the 1st team played effectively on the break creating several chances. Futsal UY got one back when Bodo was tackled and Owen eventually scored. With the game at a tense stage both sides had chances, however, Futsal UY levelled the scores with a screaming drive from Jonny that stung the fingers of Bodo. The game was a tense affair, Futsal UY thought they were about to win it, with Owen bearing down on the ball in front of net, was denied by a superb diving lunge by Webby to deny Futsal UY. The 1st team had their chance to win in at the end as Saul broke free, as he went to put the ball past RD he was challenged by Owen who made a superb recovery, the game finished 4-4 a true classic! On the other pitch team Pizzley began a superb ending to the day for them defeating the York 3rd team, maybe the ‘Futsal Pints’ taken in by Beard and Louis the previous night didn’t help as the 3rd team went down 6-5.

The 3rd team, however, struck back in their next game defeating team Lilly by 10-4, underlining, the defensive problems of team Lilly missing their expected lynchpin Guy Aspin and the quality of their own side, Scotty also reminded everyone of his superb goalkeeping ability with two fine performances. On the other pitch a fine game between team Kermit and the York 1st team followed. The game was 2-2 at half time as team Kermit defied the odds and pressurised the 1st team throughout the half. The game, however, was marred by a rather disturbing and out of character refereeing performance by RD, who lost both the count on the score, foul count and possibly the respect of both sets of players, this eventually led to him winning the as ever hotly contested Andy Pasley award! On the pitch the game continued and was played with a fantastic work rate by both sides, the first team ran out winners despite Sarge missing a penalty, superbly struck goals by Seb, Sarge and two for Saul saw the 1st team eventually running out 7-5 winners. Team Kermit must take great credit for their performance who had a much smaller squad than the 1st team.

These efforts clearly took it out of Team Kermit who were then taken apart by the York 3rd team who were playing their 3rd game on the spin, a superb effort and show of stamina, who were inspired by their captain Louis and player of the tournament The Beard! They cruised to an 11-4 victory, which due to events on the other pitch secured them their place as runners up, a brilliant performance for a side that had been literally thrown together in the space of three days. The other pitch saw a severely depleted Futsal UY who had to play 2 games back to back with only 5 players take on team Pizzley. Futsal UY put aside their injury crisis by taking a 3-1 lead into the second half, however, Pizzley’s side brought the scores level at 3-3 with some great finishing and superb goalkeeping by big Dan. Futsal UY thought they had won the game at 4-3, however, a contender for goal of the tournament by Matt Bolton, a superb volley into the bottom corner levelled the game, there was still time for 2 more goals and chances for both sides to win the game but the full time score finished 5-5.

The final two games of the weekend saw the University 1st team secure their title with a 5-1 victory over team Pizzley, a big shout out to Bodo who made a crucial save at 2-1, the University 1st team showed great character in some tough games and showed just why they are indeed the 1st team claiming a much deserved trophy. The other game saw Team Lilly take on Futsal UY, in a lively and well spirited game Futsal UY secured a 13-4 victory, including a shock second half hat-trick by Round Dave who stunned the world with his on pitch cameo, a great sight at the end of the game also saw Kezza return from his injury hell and grab himself a goal. Lilly remained in great spirits despite his side’s demise and promised to be back next year with an even whiter smile if possible!

So a brilliant weekend once again comes to an end, one of the best Futsal events since I have been in the club and next year will be even bigger and better, with hopefully all the President’s teams returning and Paddy’s new old boys entering. The final standings were;

MIZUNO CUP 2006: York shows the professionals how to …… party!

York University arrived in Brno on the back of regional press coverage and with a great confidence in bringing the trophy home, they however, returned with eight hangovers and a goal difference of – 46!

Upon arriving at the hotel the York squad realised something was wrong . . . teams in matching tracksuits, bobble hats and flip flops! Only York and Teesside players drinking at the bar and a pool table that a blind armless man could have potted a ball on! At this moment we realised that it could be a long weekend! The first night passed without event, with the players getting mentally psyched for the big tournament, an early night and dubbed Knightrider followed.

The tournaments opening day came and soon York realised that they were out of their league, Sandefjord Futsal opened up York with some fantastic passing and skilful moves, leaving the York side in complete shock as they swept in several goals. The pressure was non-stop as the classy Norwegians continued to dominate, a half time score of 6-0 left York with much to think about. The second half continued in much the same fashion as Sandefjord fashioned another seven goals. However, there was some consolation for York as Dan Depledgski salvaged some pride with a fine individual goal, leaving the final score 13-1.

The dismayed York side retreated to their dressing room with much to think about, the discussion saw team pretty boy and future sock model Jonny McWilliams switch to playing in defence and the team vowed that they would not be beaten in such a manor again. The second game against Czech side Olympik Melnik, York started in a much more confident manor, keeping the score to 0-0 after 5 minutes, including some fine saves from Dave “Scotty” Godfrey and excellent last ditch defending by Dan Webster and Jonny McWilliams. However, the Czechs superior class soon told and they opened up York on several occasions with their crisp passing and greater fitness levels, leading to the half time score being 7-0. The second half continued in the same vein with York making friends amongst the crowd due to their heroic spirit and at times desperate defending! Despite this the score eventually reached 13-0 and by now Melnik were in complete control, leading to them playing their goalkeeper on the halfway line, at which point York left an indelible mark upon the tournament. Dave “Sarge” Craddock dispossessed a Czech player and from within his own half lofted the ball perfectly into the opponents net, the crowd went crazy as Craddock sealed the goal of the tournament. This goal gave York a fillip and a certain second goal was denied by some dodgy officiating, as York pushed on the Czechs added one on the break to leave the final score 14-1, although the margin was greater, York can take real pride in their performance in this game.

The final game was always going to be the hardest for York, weary legs and a squad of 8 students faced Era-Pack Chrudim, Czech National Champions (including some international players) two years running and confirmed group winners. York found themselves up against a constant tide of pressure and were soon behind, the amazing team work and skill of Chrudim was too much and a half time score of 11-0 was by no means flattering! The second half saw more of the same but a true York hero was born, Jonny McWilliams flung himself in front of shots and crosses making an incredible headed goal-line clearance. Along with a headed goal line clearance from Dan Webster and several top saves from Dave Godfrey York kept the score down to 21-0, this despite the efforts of the York team, the Czech team and UEFA officials to allow York a well deserved consolation by even stopping the clock, however it was not to be and narrowly on points and goal difference York were eliminated!

At this point, the review becomes PADDYGATE!!!!!! Like all great leaders, Drysdale has a weakness …………….. 45 year old Czech women! Upon exit from the tournament the York squad made it their mission to drink Brno dry! After being offered some cheap hookers by Charles the tour guide, the York squad quickly split and decided to check the town out on their own. Drysdale was seen in the first bar, talking to a Turkish couple whom he reliably informed about the clubs upcoming match with Norwich Union! Having succeeded with this mission, Drysdale continued his binge, including pints, absinthe, B52 shots and Snooze. Upon arriving at the club, Drysdale set about clearing the dance floor with his offside trap manoeuvre, not only succeeding in clearing the dance floor but also blowing openings for two of his team mates. With the floor empty of young women, one poor 45 year old was caught in the Drysdale headlights, he stalked his prey and pounced, a fine effort as Drysdale doubled his age, whilst the rest of the squad hunted for her daughter!

The York team eventually reached the hotel at around 5am, several drinks later. The following day saw Dinamo Moscow win the Mizuno cup and the York squad come within minutes of missing their flights! More shame was yet to come for Drysdale as he caused a terrorist scare on the train back with what can only be described as severe flatulence.

All in all an incredible tour, a learning curve for York and a weekend’s action that will ensure Drysdale leaves York as a true legend of the club!

It's all kicking off at York Uni Futsal Club

2006 is sure to be an exciting time for York University Futsal club. With the new sports hall ready, trips to Scotland, Czech Republic, Eindhoven lined up and the club's annual tour (tbc), visits from qualified UEFA coaches and a large tournament to be hold in York the future is definitedly bright.

The team for the Mizuno Cup is now sorted, 8 of us are flying out there on 13th Jan for a two day tournament. With teams from the UEFA Futsal cup entering we're sure to come home empty handed but it should be great fun.
There should be some qualified coaches from around the York area coming to give us some training in the next couple of months and the club are trying to entice Simon Clifford to pay us a visit
In February we will taking two teams (+ possibly a women's team) upto Scotland to play some teams up there, hopefully in a tournament. Futsal is really taking off up in Scotland.

President's weekend is taking place February 4th & 5th. A two day tournament is planned with 3 old boys teams and 3 current teams battling it out for the inaugral Presidents Cup.

Two teams have been entered into the IUTT tournament in Eindhoven (25th-28th May). This is a tournament for University futsal clubs around Europe.
Both teams are going strong in the league with Futsal UY having a realistic chance of winning it. The two teams are also through to the cup semi finals.

We have entered a Team to travel to the Czech Republic and play in the Mizuno Cup. The standard will be very high, last year Dinamo Moscow played in this tournament. Dinamo Moscow lost in the UEFA Futsal Cup final on penalties last year.

This should be a great experience for the club, and hopefully we should be able to take a lot from this tournament and apply it to our game to further improve the standard of futsal in the club.

IUTT 2006

International University Totelos Tournament (IUTT) 2006, Eindhoven

Keeping up the club's fine tradition of being globetrotters, we will be entering the 2006 IUTT tournament in Eindhoven.

Taking place from the 25th-28th May IUTT is a competiton between all the Universities across Europe.
This year we intend to take 2 teams consisting of squads of 8, there are 14 places available and as such are only open at the moment to members of the 1st and 2nd team squads. However we will be organising a tour to Spain at Easter and if there are not enough takers for IUTT we will open up spaces to the rest of the club.

Costs should be no more than £150 including flights, accomodation, lunch dinner and breakfast for 3 days and entry to the IUTT Pub crawl. Could all those interested speak to either Round Dave or Sarge who are organising the tournament. Below is the link for the website:

On a cold and blustery night, York’s finest 5 a side footballers, formed an 11-a-side super team, to take on an invitation from Villa Old Boys, in an effort to raise money for Children in Need.

In a friendly and good natured game both sides struggled to settle in the first half, the cold conditions not helping either side get into an early groove. It was however Villa Old Boys who were first to get going and York soon had goalkeeper Bodo to thank for keeping the score at 0-0, a string of fine saves denying the well organised and more experienced Villa Old Boys. The deadlock was broken just before half time with a fine solo goal from the Villa Old Boys midfielder, who ran through several challenges before delicately lifting the ball over the out coming keeper. Half time came with York yet to have a shot on target.

The second half started in unfortunate circumstances when York Striker Saul collided with Villa’s large defensive midfielder, leaving the striker with a broken collar bone. This seemed to disrupt York, however Villa carried on in the same vain as Villa Old Boys soon doubled their lead with another well taken strike, this served however, to only galvanise the York team. Returning striking legend Carl Lewis struck instantly with a well placed strike to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Lewis will be returning permanently and his deadly left foot will be a welcome addition to the York side. Suddenly York were flying with Johnny pulling the strings in midfield and Webster and Ben commanding the defence.

As the half went on the home fans began to find their voice and the fear that York were creating saw them turn on certain players. Dave Craddock once known as Sarge was destroying the Villa right back and the home fans began to abuse him, “Hucknall sing us a song”, could often be heard from the sidelines. The high spirits of the home fans was soon rewarded as Villa once again extended their lead not once but twice taking the score to 4-1. At this point York seem deflated, however a tap in from substitute Derby saw York once again get back into the game making it 4-2. However, tired legs soon told and gaping holes soon appeared in York’s defence as Villa made it 5, by now the fans could barely contain themselves and cries for Hucknall to give them a wave were getting louder and louder. A late 6th goal was disallowed by the final whistle; York gave a fine account of themselves in this hard fought friendly but came short against a fine and well organised opponent.

Following the game a trip to Leeds was cut short when the club the York team attended had to be shut early for security reasons, police had been sent a tip that Mick Hucknall was in the club and that the possibility of crowd unrest was too high due to escalating policing costs and the fear that Hucknall would perform a greatest hits set.

The game of Futsal is one of the world's fastest-growing sports, played by an estimated 25 million people worldwide. While still relatively small in the UK, Futsal is much more established in Greece, enjoying greater recognition and popularity. As one of the leading University Futsal clubs in the UK, York is in an ideal position to act as an ambassador of the English game, with an annual foreign tour allowing our team to experience different styles of Futsal against professional teams across Europe.

The first week of the Easter holidays saw the club travel to Athens for its inaugural foreign tour, with two matches organised against the Greek Second Division sides, Paraskeyis and Yperion. The first of York's two games was against F.C. Olympia AG. Paraskeyis, a semi-professional team who were, at the time, sitting on top of the Greek Second Division.

Our team had previously played many Futsal matches at a high standard, but were still slightly unprepared for the speed of the game. Paraskeyis controlled the match through an effective passing game and the fact that they had a large, skilful squad with quick players who could play in several different positions with ease. The strong defence of our opponents, coupled with the impressive display of their goalkeeper, meant that our team had few chances and were only able to score twice, through Scott Manford and James Kerruish. Paraskeyis proved to be formidable opponents who clearly deserved their lead at the top of the Second Division.

Our own performance was hampered by the lack of playing together regularly and the fact that none of us had played Futsal for over a week. However, we were was against another Second Division side, Yperion, and was played in a sports complex that was home to the Greek First Division champions, Doukas.

After the lessons learnt from the previous match, York adopted a more defensive approach to the game, and for the first ten minutes we evenly matched our opponents. The York squad was slightly depleted, affecting the number of substitutes we could use in the match, and with the fitness levels of Yperion illustrated through their stamina and sharp touch, they scored a number of goals immensely, with every player raising his game to evenly match our opponents. We scored two goals through James Kerruish and Nick Williamson, with Simon Redwood enjoying an impressive second half in the York goal. The team gelled together well and began to perform to its potential, with York playing a more professional game and creating an effective passing system. Unfortunately we could not overturn the deficit created in the first half and Yperion emerged victorious. The second half performance in our last match showed that player-for-player, the two teams were very close, and that with better organisation, York have a very capable side.

It is easy to forget that we were playing against some very dedicated, professional sides in Greece, and to be playing as well as them at times was a good achievement. One of the highlights of the tour was to watch the players adapt to a different style of Futsal and to raise their game to compete against semi-professional players. Many of our players felt that we could have won had we played another game, and with greater organisation and more matches together, we have the potential to compete with many teams.

The tour was an invaluable learning experience for the players, and for this reason alone, it can be considered an extremely successful debut tour for the club. The aim of York University Futsal club is to hold a foreign tour every year with the team hopefully competing against teams in Barcelona in 2004. Finally, I would like to thank the Greek Futsal teams, Paraskeyis and Yperion for taking the time to play us, and all the tour members and players for making it such a successful and memorable trip.

In February we will taking two teams (+ possibly a women's team) upto Scotland to play some teams up there, in a Scottish Uni’s v English Uni’s tournament in Edinburgh. Futsal is really taking off up in Scotland. President's weekend is taking place February 4th & 5th. A two day tournament is planned with 3 old boys teams and 3 current teams battling it out for the inaugral Presidents Cup. Two teams have been entered into the IUTT tournament in Eindhoven (25th-28th May). This is a tournament for University futsal clubs around Europe. Both teams are going strong in the league with Futsal UY having a realistic chance of winning it. The two teams are also through to the cup semi finals.

Futsal UY Legends - Simon Pizzley

Simon “Rhino” “Pizzley” Pizzey (University of York President 2003/04) remains the first and only Futsaller to rise to President in his 1st year at University.

Pizzley was elected at the end of only his second term at University gaining a suspicious 100% of the vote, clearly the mark of a man with friends in high places. He started searching for power from virtually day one at the club, being found in Futsal Captain, and University of York heartthrob Scott Manford’s bed within weeks of arriving in the North-east.

Although his election result would suggest Pizzley was a man of the people, he chose to run Futsal UY with the smallest committee in the club’s history (just a temperamental Treasurer-the Slav and a showman of a Secretary/Merchandise rep at his disposal. Barnez was allegedly the First Team Captain and Social Secretary at the time but there is no evidence of this and we are lead to believe this is just a rumour). However the walls of the Rose and Crown reported in Vision that many of his crazy policies were dreamt up between hamlets with Pasley Bear.

Pizzley put an end to many attackers’ dreams of Futsal security after their cross over from the violent 5-a-side University competitions. Pizzley whipped out many an attacker during his time, a ruthless approach which won him few friends but much silverware (winners medals in 5-a-side and 6-a-side University competitions). However the trophy which he strived for the most was an end of term trophy...his attempts paired him with nearly all the Futsalling elite: Team Futsal with Arse and Slav, Nothing Special featuring Sweet n Sour Dan, and finally Dead Presidents, including characters such as O Money and Snarf Durst.

Pizzley presided over a number of major break-throughs in the club’s short history. He was heavily involved in York’s first major giant killing: a 6-5 win over the National Champions Sheffield Hallam, a team featuring 3 England players.

Pizzley’s appearances at training became increasingly scarce as he looked to profit from the club’s international reputation. However, the prospect of bringing foreign teams to play in York ground to a halt when he found himself in hot water with the AU, University and the EU over reports of trafficking Moldovans into the country, allegedly to play the university side. He also led the club into the country’s 1st University Futsal championships where the club gained a respectable 5th position with victories over some large sports-based University’s football 1st teams, including the chav infested Manchester Uni side.

Pizzley tried to form a Women’s Futsal team and would probably be modest enough to claim that he put the wheels in motion for the successful women's club that we see today. As Pizzley’s reign entered its closing weeks he found himself increasingly becoming a punch bag-prez, absorbing more banter than his duties allowed him to dispense.

Pizzley was a permanent fixture in the first team since his first term at the university, an ever present on both the Athens 2003 tour and the Amsterdam/Holland 2005 campaign. He would surely have gone on to set new heights for University of York appearances if apathy and politics had not got in the way. The last cap he won was on the tour of Holland 2005 where York were fiercely outplayed against one of the amazing street soccer teams from the favellas of Amsterdam. Enter Lilly the pink....

PART 3 Kezza gets shat on

“Jesus loves you, even if you don’t know it.” We turn round to face the peculiar person who said this, the site of this wheelchair bound man, surrounded by signs of religious messages, initially brings a smile to our faces. We ignore him and walk away.

So all we have to do is defend. Defend a 1-0 lead for 30 seconds and then we make the cut for the top half of the competition. Easy? Should be. But we forgot one thing, we were playing against Germans, and Germans always manage to turn 1-0 into 1-1 with one of the last kicks of the game, and so that’s how this script goes. We get knocked out. They go through. Kezza’s mate Tony gets to play against some of the best university teams in Europe, while Kezza gets to play against team Slav.

“Jesus loves you, even if you don’t know it.” we turn round again to find the disabled Christian guy following us down the street. All that we can hear are the words “Jesus loves you, even if you don’t know it.” and the hum of his motorised buggy. It was like have a Darlic following you that had just found religion!!

Amsterdam!!! Back there again, the sweet smells of the coffee shops and stale canal water. Swamp off his tits, everyone else watching the football, last day of the season. Who’s going to get relegated? It was decided that we should bet on who stays up. Derby goes for outsiders West Brom! Get in 6 Euro in the pocket! Not for long, there’s a bar near by. A bar with many a story from our last visit, a Bar that still smells of the Bear.

Walking through the streets of the ‘Dam. What happens next? KEZZA GETS SHAT ON. Awesome!

So we’ve lost to YorvicBlades, can’t remember all the other results, but we come to our last game on the opening day of the tournament. And so back to the start of my review. 4-1 down, 5 minutes to go. Rubbish!! But then something happens, we click, Futsal becomes clear, simple. Let the goals flow. Carl, Sarge, Derby on the score sheet. Pulled it back, level, 1 minute to go. One of the greatest comebacks in Futsal history? Well it aint finished yet. This story gets dragged on more by Kezza. Kezza taking his moment to become a legend, before getting shat on the next day. A 5-4 victory. Everyone on a high, but for me that’s what Holland’s all about!!

Derby's IUTT Review - Part 2

“Dodó Dodó Dodó Dodó Dodó” call the Latino Fans from the side lines. Dom’s fan club had come out in force to watch THE GAME. He had met them the night before, drunk, of course! After claiming he was the greatest ever Futsal player in the history of the sport, and telling them all about how our team was going to wipe the floor with all the others, it seemed they had turned up to see if his game was as good as the one he talked.

The best thing about Holland? The Weed? The Liberal attitudes? Friendly People? No Hills? ‘Tis all good. However for me it has to be the random sculptures they built in the middle of fields, roundabouts, airports, or just the middle of nowhere. In Rotterdam we were treated to the giant rabbits, in Amsterdam, the lizards, in Shippol giant shoes. What would Eindhoven have to offer? Not a lot it seems at first. But then as we walk towards town, we approach a roundabout. Giant yellow skittles, some appearing to flying, around a giant black bowling ball!! Surly this is to stoners what a bright orange road cone is to a polar bear! Just trying to fuck with your head. We climbed the ball and got our photo taken, Paddy on the top, making the nazi solute, of course.

“it’s like getting a Goose to move something”- What the hell does that mean??I wasn’t there when it was first said, I heard about it later, apparently it’s a Sebism of sorts. We discuss this at great lengths at different times of our trip, at different states of soberness, not wanting to ask Seb what it means in case it pisses him off. Until we leave, no nonce Dom decides to ask him. Apparently it doesn’t mean much. Disappointing.

We line up against the Germans. They all seam bigger and stronger than us (“9 players and not a hard man between us”) with one exception, Kezza’s mate Pampers, Tony Cottee, the little German Shit. The Game starts well, lots of early possession, a few chances for us, none for them. The Crowed are cheering for Dom “ Dodó Dodó Dodó Dodó Dodó” will he rise to the challenge? Course he does, slotting the ball into the net from a hard angle. The crowd go wild. 1-0, tis looking good………….

Part 3

Derby's IUTT Review - Part 1

So we find ourselves 4-1 down with 5 minutes to go. A solitary goal from Chav being the only highpoint in an otherwise very poor game from the orange army. Looks like were going to into the bottom of the bottom leagues, playing for the wooden spoon. The shame. Any hope? I think not!

The place Stanstead Airport. More specifically, the Weatherspoons Stanstead Airport, the time 4:46am. the drink, Pint of Cider, more specifically Blackthorn. Starting as we mean to continue? Ever started drinking so early? (Yes, for the world cup, Japan.)

How do you start a Teddy bear race?

“if you were in prison and your cellmate was forcing you to have sex with him would you rather give it or take it?”“SARGE YOU GAY!”

Our fist game was against the team that eventually came top of our group and third overall. We last 3-0, not a bad result all things considered! If only they’d beaten the Germans by the same margin. F*cking Germans!!

Upon arrival in Eindhoven we went into town, grab a few drinks, something to eat. Everyone went for a ham and cheese toasty, apart from Dom, who wanted something more Dutch. The waiter recommended a cheese sandwich! He went for a strange sausage type thing instead.

So we’ve been drinking all day, most of us are pissed, couple of us are stoned. Dom goes round telling everyone that our team is the best, and he’s the best player. He then impresses a French team by asking them to pass him the ball, trying to have a shot, missing the ball and falling on his arse. We then send him to bed. Swamp and Derby are laugh at walls all night.

Kezza gets out of his sleeping bag, puts on some cloths, and starts walking sharpish across the hall. “where’s he going?” Sarge asks, as Kezza gets Pampers to remove his towel from the door. Kezza goes out of the fire exit, realises he has gone the wrong way, looks embarrassed as the Germans laugh at him and runs back. A good start to the day.

Futsal UY Legend - Dom Richardson

Dominic 'Dom' Richardson

What has this man not done for futsal? He even took a Brazilian wife just to be closer to the games roots and raise the chance of his son being a world futsal star.

It all started back in '98 when Dom founded the University of York Futsal Club. It attracted many mediterranean and south american legends with commentator friendly names such as Ricardo and Eraldo. As the club progressed Dom added coaching to his repertoire and ensured respectable performances in high level competition, in particular, 5th place in the 1st ever National Student Championships in Sheffield.

Being built like a prop forward didn't dampen his enthusiasm for thegame. He developed a wide range of techniques to improve his goal potential, greed being just one of them. With a wide range of tricks and outstanding ball control, many a York team has relied on his abilities for success. His most memorable goal being scored from his own half against Slater Printing (Yes, the Slater Printing, a worthy opponent).

He always managed to save the best for when his pride was at stake. In a college futsal tournament he started to receive some outrageous 'Huxley Pig' banter from a twat in the football club from the balcony. As this continued and got louder, Dom waited patiently. Then when the ball came to him just inside the opponents half, he volleyed it into the top corner. Then 10 seconds later he scored another screamer, just for good measure. Dom 2 Football Club 0.

And his crowning glory? Without a doubt playing an integral part in the clubs legendary 5-4 success with a team of heavyweights against Sheffield Hallam, who boasted 2 England futsallers at the time. It upset the dick with the stupid hair enough that a year later he still wanted revenge, culminating in him trying to pick a fight with Pizzley for playing with 'their' ball.

Futsal has filled his trophy cabinet, and made his life worthwhile. Soon, we will only have memories...

National Student Futsal Championships 2004

Whilst a relatively low profile club on campus, York Futsal club seized their opportunity to establish themselves as one of the top University sides in the country, with York A team finishing 5 th out of 12 teams in the inaugural National Student Championships in Sheffield. This achievement was made all the more impressive by the fact that top sporting Universities such as Sheffield, Manchester, Sheffield Hallam, and Hull entered teams, made up of their football 1 st teams, to represent them in Futsal.

York A started well, beating Manchester 's A team 1-0 in the first game, with captain Dominic Richardson grabbing the vital goal. Although dominating for large parts of the game, York were frustrated by UEA's B team, only managing a 1-1 draw with a team they should have finished-off in the first half. In the games against Hull A and Sheffield A, York played a tight and competitive match, punching well above their weight, but were eventually overcome by the individual ability of the two University's 1 st team footballers. However, York can take pride from the fact that, although Sheffield won 5-0, they were the eventual competition winners, beating Hallam 5-2 in the final. Finishing 3 rd of 6 in their group, York entered the playoffs with confidence, drawing UEA's A team. After an intense match York made 5 th place theirs with a well-fought 2-1 victory.

Unfortunately, York B team, despite some good performances, were not so successful, finishing 10 th overall. Although Futsal will always be overshadowed by the football club on campus, the club showed that they are capable of beating the top sides, and that with a firmly established reputation nationally, the future is bright for York Futsal Club.

Day 1

Two days, two separate tournaments, two different York teams turned up. The first, the Hull Futsal Open (Saturday 20th of August), we arrived hung over, in need of sleep, and hair standing on end from some of Bodo's crazy driving on the way down. The team - Bodo, Paddy, Swamp, Derby, Kezza, Carl and Saul, all been looking forward to this for several weeks.

Game 1: University of York v Washwood Heath Utd
Our first game paired us against the Birmingham Champions and F.A National Futsal Finals qualifiers 2005. Believing each match to be one half of fifteen minutes, we went full out, straight from the start, using Saul's pace to open up their defence and create ourselves chances. After fifteen minutes we were 3-0 up, job well done? NO- it turns out each game is twenty minutes-each way!!! Towards the end of the first half the tempo we've been playing at starts to tell and Washwood manage to get the score level by half time. In the second half we changed our tactics, played a lot slower, passed it round more at the back, and dominated the game, despite us only having seven players- compared to their sixteen!! Going into the final two minutes we were one goal up, then they scored a very debatable goal! The ball beats Bodo, hits his near post, goes across the face of the goal, hit's the far post then comes out. Did the ball cross the line? The answer to that question split our team, their team and, more importantly, the two refs, who consulted with each other then gave the goal on the grounds that benefit of doubt goes to the attacking team! Once again we are unlucky, but the game was enjoyable to play in, even if we felt our performance deserved better than a draw

Man of the Match: Carl Lewis-return to form, tested the keeper on many occasions, looked like he could bang them in all day.

In-between games we discover a small animal park outside, the highlights being the wallaby playing rugby, and Carl laughing at the brightly coloured birds having sex. Also during the break Derby has a prawn sandwich and feels sick after two bites.

Game 2: University of York v Hull City Supporters Club
After seeing the First game Hull played we knew they were beatable. After surviving a scary start, which saw Hull start when we only had four players on the pitch as Bodo was still having a drink off the pitch on the halfway line, we settled on the ball well and dominated the whole game. Saul's pace again creating a majority of the chances. Due to some fine defending from Paddy we managed to keep Hull's chances down to a few long range efforts that hardly challenged Bodo. In this game we manage to keep a clean sheet, the only team to do so in the whole tournament!!

Man of the Match: Saul Hubbard-ran his heart out, was all over the pitch, and chipped in with a well taken brace.

Game 3: University of York v Piemonte
Piemonte- currently sitting at the top of the Grimsby league and a team we've already played once this year. In our first meeting they came out as winners, time for revenge?
In the first half the teams looked evenly matched, both having limited chances, but with Piemonte finishing on top, taking a 4-2 lead into the second half, again the greater squad size of the opposition was showing. So 4-2 down, we need something to change, and something did change, Swampy came to life. After putting in two average performances in the first games the swampman woke up, injected some skill into the team, picking the ball up in defence running the length of the pitch and creating chances for the team, Sexual Futsal at its finest. This combined with some superb defensive work from Paddy allowed us to play some fine futsal in the second half, pulling the score level 4-4, with Carl completing his hatrick! Then, as appears to be fast becoming tradition, Kezza scores the final goal of the match, giving us a 5-4 victory (this time he managed to avoid getting shat on the next day!)

Man of the Match: Despite Carl's Hatrick and Swamp's fine display man of the match goes to Patrick Drysdale for and immense second half defensive display, reminiscent of Guy at the Roses.

Game 4: University of York v Team Palestra (Awesome team from Moldova)
After seeing the Moldavians annihilate the opposition in their previous 3 games, averaging a goal every 2 minutes, we know this was going to be a hard game! The game started badly with Palestra scoring after only 32 seconds, then again in the fourth minute. But we didn't let it get to us, we defended well and frustrated them. Hitting them on the break Carl pulled one back with a well taken goal, running from the halfway line. We then pulled level Carl scoring again, with an almost identical goal! However, us pulling level seemed to give the Moldavians an extra lease of life, with them coming out convincing winners.

Day 2

The second tournament of the two days saw the top two teams from the Hull Open, Team Palestra and ourselves, joined by Reckitts and Kickers to compete in the North East of England Open (Sunday 21st of August) For this competition we were joined by Dom, giving us a team of Bodo, Paddy, Swamp, Derby, Kezza, Carl, Saul and Dom. This time we arrived aching from the days previous hard graft, most of us injured, Derby with a re-broken toe, and some of us having spent the night sleeping on the floor.!

Game one: University of York v Kickers
Kickers are a team from London, made up mainly of Brazilians, their game was very skill based and despite some top class defending from Paddy they managed to wear us down, again the larger squad size making a difference.

Game two: University of York v Reckitts
Reckitts are the Hull Champions and performed well in this years F.A National Futsal Finals. Despite this we managed to match them for most of the game, both teams had periods of domination in the game and at half time the scores were level. In the second half however we tired badly, yesterdays games taking their toll on us.

Game three: University of York v Team Palestra (again!!)
So we come to our second game against the awesome Moldavians, who are still unbeaten. We decide to adopt a defend first, attack on the break tactic. It worked well, everyone defended brilliantly, special mentions again to Paddy, who totally commanded the back, and to Bodo, who looked unbeatable pulling off some great saves. At half time the score was 0-0, making us the only team to hold the Moldavians for a whole half of futsal!! The second half didn't start well, we conceded in the first minute, but we didn't let our heads drop, we stuck to our plan and soaked up more of their attacking pressure. Then after one of their attacks Saul breaks free, their keeper comes out to meet him on the halfway line, both go into the challenge, somehow Saul manages to get a foot on the ball and directs it towards the open net. Goal!! Upon the restart and some more great defencive work it's Carls turn to break, again the keeper comes out to meet him, Carl cleanly rounds the keeper to leave himself a tap in! 2-1 York take the lead, the only team to be beating Team Palestra at any stage of the tournament! Unfortunately it didn't last, but we certainly did ourselves proud!!

A great event, that we all enjoyed playing in. We all learnt a lot, especially about the best way to play against certain teams. Hopefully a similar competition will be run next year, and if it is the case then the University should certainly enter again. We proved we can play against, and give a good game to, some of the best teams in England. Hopefully for similar tournaments we will be able to get a larger squad together to make us more competitive.

The showdown between Grimsby and York. York brought three teams, the first team, second team, and the womens futsal team. For the women, it was their first competative match. For the men, it was a chance to stack up against some quality opposition, the first team going up against some truly big teams, one including Johnny Goodhand, former England Futsal international. The second team had some formidable opposition as well, though not with quite as stellar a resume as those the first team was going to be slated against.

Most of the team travelled up early that morning, the firsts having the earliest game. The women, though they didn't need to play until much later, were almost all present for the first game, cheering the team on. It did little good, as York faced the hard hitting Magpies. Regardless of combinations of defenders and midfielders, York was annihilated by an amazing squad who scored at will. With every player proving to be a striking option, and crisp passing, the Magpies took an early commanding lead. Dom provided the little offensive spark, but credit goes to the defensive efforts of Guy, Paddy, and Dennis, as well as the help they did get from the rest of the team. It was just never going to keep out a team of this caliber. The Grimsby team had a very strong keeper as well, who on several occasions kept Carl and Tiago from scoring. Not afraid to use physical force, the bigger Grimsby team also pushed around smaller midfielders Ken and Tiago. Still, the two were able to pull off some awesome stunts which resulted in good chances. Derby tried every trick in the captain's book to get back into the game, but it was not to be. In the end the Magpies prevailed 13-2, leaving York thoroughly frustrated.

The next game featured the second team, at this point quite terrified by the skill level of the opposition. Stepping onto the pitch with a team that had not played many games together, as both Saul and Sebastian had played only for the firsts previously, the defense and attack combination started off shakily. The other team took advantage to go 1-0 up. With furious efforts by Saul, and brilliant work by the captain, Sarge, and his midfield partner Kezza, York was able to both equalize and take the lead. Unfortunately Kezza got injured in a mighty collision with one of the opposition and would not play futsal for the remainder of the year. Foo stepped up, as did Tim. A red card saw Grimsby go down to 4 men, only to have one of the star players from the first game come back (as they didn't have enough players) as a sub. Well neutralized by the defensive efforts of Daisy, Sebastian and Foo, he was held to just complaining. In the waning moments of the game, he made his presence felt. A low flying toe shot levelled the score at 2 a piece. A good game ended with a few missed shots, and a 2-2 draw. Keeper Little Dave had a great game, and the team proved that team defence is critical to games.

The firsts were up next, facing an equally impressive squad, though not quite as strong a squad as the Magpies. However, frustration quickly set in as they fell behind by several goals. Dennis' cries all over the pitch made it clear that York was not playing its finest futsal. Again, a bigger squad proved to be a challenge for the midfield to handle as they struggled to keep the ball. Resolute not to lose, York managed to produce a furious come-back. Dom and Carl were among the players who found the back of the net as York pulled back to within one, 7-6. It looked as though York was going to post a great come from behind victory. However, the surge took too much energy, and the other team struck back and deflated the York team. The first team ended up losing by a few goals.

The second team took the pitch against the team who was going to host the party that night, Chicago Rock. This team had shown up with no keeper, though it had a large squad of outfielders. The Magpies keeper jumped in net for them, something that was protested heavily. However, it didn't matter much as York capitalized on the weaker opposition many times. The only shot on goal for Chicago Rock was a long distance strike which Little Dave took care of easily. Meanwhile lots of shots on goal and passing combinations resulted in a solid lead. Saul, Tim and Sarge provided tremendous offensive firepower. A final goal from Sebastian (using his toe) led to the Magpie keeper having an outburst and throwing the ball at Tim in the dying moments of the game. Tim Cooper had a superb move around a defender and a cracking shot on goal. Overall credit goes to the midfield and attackers who kept up a furious attack and played some outstanding futsal. The only blemish was an own goal by Little Dave from a corner kick. By some miracle, it was struck at such pace that as he went to clear it, it bounced off his foot and into the net. Little consolation for the opponents who fell 9-1.

The men were done for the day, but it was time for the women to play their first official game under captain and club president Kirstin. The first team, not part of the York vs Grimsby count, was a Scunthorpe Ladies team. A very skilled team, York struggled to keep possesion of the ball. Great defending from Ceri and goalkeeping from Helen kept the score fairly low, but there was a distinct deficit by the end of the first half. there were a few good attempts on goal from Alannah and Faye, but the keeper was able to keep them away. Regardless of score, the women never gave up and fought well right to the end. though it was a loss, the team clearly adjusted as the game went on and finished with quite a good performance, and all anxiety out of their system.

After a short break, the women got to play the second game of the day against a local Grimsby team. This time, the women responded with a tremendous victory. The other team, distinctly smaller than York, struggled to keep up with the pace and power of Becky, Allanah and Faye up front, and could not break through the defensive wall of Ceri, Kirstin, and H. Michelle also put on a show, enjoying the game thoroughly. It was to be Faye's game in the end, scoring most of Yorks 10 goals, with Ceri and Alannah also finding the back of the net with some skilled shooting, Ceri finding the top-left corner, and Alannah striking from range with a cracking shot. A fun game ended with a solid 10-1 victory, Helen just missing out on a clean sheet.

As a result of the days action, York and Grimsby had 2 wins and a draw each in the competition, but as York had travelled there, they were given the trophy for the Grimsby York challenge. Credit to the Second team and Womens team being able to get results after a challenging day for the First team.

The evening featured a party at Chicago Rock and a fun night out for all three teams.

The next day would see the firsts playing against skilled opposition once more. Visibly tired from the previous day, the first team fell behind early against a very quick opponent. Tiago and Ken provided some spark in the midfield, but it was not enough to make a dent in the opposition's defence. Guy and Paddy struggled in the back to keep the opposition from striking on goal. Dennis tried to motivate the team with his cries from the back, but it was to no avail. The energy just wasn't there, as the gap got bigger and bigger. The game ended with the firsts losing in a very hard-fought game.

The seconds played against virtually the same team the firsts had just played, though they used a few more substitutes in this game. With nothing to lose, the seconds gave it all they could, trying hard on defense to stop the team that had several offensive options. With a defensive line-up of Ben and Sebastian for most of the game, the opposition struggled a bit, but were able to break through a few times. Up front Saul and Tim did their best to frustrate the opponent, finding it difficult to break through. The team kept passing and would eventually find the net to go 2-1 down. The final score was 3-1, a strong effort by the second team.

With no break, the seconds now had to face the first team. The last time the firsts and seconds played eachother, the firsts won by a healthy margin. Captain Derby was hoping to replicate that, while Sarge had to find a way to stop the attack by the firsts. The game kicked off, and the clear fatigue showed on the seconds as Dom took advantage of the lethargic start to make it 4-0 in the first minutes, using his great scoring touch. The firsts relished a chance to get some goals as Carl and Dom kept up the attack. A mistake in the back by Guy unleashed a sprinting Sebastian who struck back for the seconds in a one on one with Dennis. Tiago made it 5-1 with a skilled shot past Dave before the Seconds took control of the game. Keeping possession well and using Ben and Sebastian as overlap options from the wings, the seconds began to claw back. Dennis came up big for the firsts, while Paddy and Guy were swamped at the back. The clinching plays were to come at the end though, when a stellar pass from Sarge found Ben who missed the wide open tap-in. In the dying seconds Saul struck the crossbar after the ball was tipped by Dennis for the save of the day. The final result was 7-6 to the firsts, who got the result, but had to work very hard against a fiery second team.

The women got to play the same Grimsby team, only this time their keeper and a few outfielders were unable to attend. One of the tournament referees went in net for the Grimsby team, and a York player had to play for the other team as well. It would prove to be a different game from the 10-1 victory they had managed the day before, as top scorer Faye was not present for this game. Frustration set in, in the wrong direction, as H tripped someone from the opponent who just happened to be from York. Ceri was none too pleased. The game ended in a loss for York, much to the elation of the Grimsby team who were expecting to be thrashed once more. Though not the best of games, it was clearly helpful to play against someone of roughly the same caliber.

IUTT 2005

Eindhoven International Universities Totelos Tournament

13th -15th May 2005

York University's second trip in the space of two months to Holland proved to be a tale of what might have been. Only 30 seconds of play left prevented us from qualifying for the higher group stages, with a guaranteed position of at least 13 th out of 25 universities from Europe .

Our first match started badly, losing 3-0, but considering the team we played finished 3 rd it was respectable at least. We then proceeded to win our next game against a team from Gloucester College. Entering our last game we knew a win would only suffice, due to University of Rostock's superior goal difference. A win was very possible though and after going 1-0 up we dominated but without further extending our lead. Rostock were content to sit back and soak up the York pressure. But for some more clinical finishing we could have put the game to bed. However, with 30 seconds left Rostock equalised to consign us to the lower rounds. It was a game we did not deserve to draw and we were all gutted.

The tournament was organised so that at the conclusion every team would be ranked form 1 to 25. Being in the lower rounds, we could only finish 14 th at best. Our next group featured two English teams.

The first game saw us play local York rivals, Yorvic blades. They had previously not won a game and were fired up for this game. A combination of York complacency and a spirited opposition saw us lose 2-1, a game we should have won. The next game would see us play another team from Gloucester College . With pride at stake we won 5-4, recovering from 4-1 down in a truly epic game. Our last couple of games would see us lose both, not exactly finishing on a high.

However, there were many positives to take from the 3 day event. The nights out were awesome, as was the trip to Amsterdam. We also got to see some amazing games, particularly the final, with a Russian team winning.

A major lesson we learned was in relation to tactics and organisation, the good teams were not always the most skilled but the most organised. This is something we need to work on. Congratulations to Nicholas Gore for being top scorer and we hope to enter this event again.

Holland Tour 2005 - Amsterdam/Rotterdam

Holland 2005

The Futsal club's annual tour would see us descend on Holland for six days, entering tournaments in Rotterdam and Amsterdam . After a successful recruitment campaign we were able to enter two teams into each tournament. The first Team (York FC) was captained by Sam Stow and the second team (Futsal UY) by Andy Pasley.

The first tournament took place in Rotterdam and consisted of 2 Belgian teams, two Dutch teams and a Japanese team. Our opening match pitted both York teams against each other. In a close game, York FC won 3-0 with goals from Carl Lewis and Sam Stow.

Having seen the standard was not as high as originally predicted both teams sensed there was a real chance to pick up some points. Futsal UY did just that, drawing with the Belgian team who came third with some stellar defending from Guy Aspin and Sebastian Groth. The next game saw York FC beat the eventual runners up (Pilnak Utd) 1-0 with a superb performance.

Futsal UY finished well, drawing their last three games, including a draw against the runners up. But for some better finishing they could have finished even higher, eventually coming sixth out of eight. York FC couldn't quite match there early form and had to settle for two draws and two defeats to eventually finish a very respectable fourth.

However, we did not come back empty-handed, much to our surprise Futsal UY won the Fairplay award. After the tournament Jonny Metgod, ex Real Madrid and Dutch National team player, presented the prizes. Special thanks go to Erwin Kamp from SDS Rotterdam for organising the tournament and to all the teams for making it such a great event.

The next day we saw Ajax v PSV at the Amsterdam Arena and shortly after started the next tournament. The teams were of a much higher standard and the atmosphere was a lot more competitive than the previous day. However, we did reasonably well, York FC winning one and drawing two, while Futsal UY managed a draw and several close games. We didn't manage to qualify for the semis but learnt a lot from playing and watching teams of a much higher standard.

Once again the fairness and lack of crunching tackles from Futsal UY shone through, enabling them to win the Fairplay award again, for the second day running!

The tour enabled us to study and learn from teams of a much higher standard. We especially learnt a lot about organisation and tactics. Watching teams of a much higher standard was also great fun, the finals proving to be excellent viewing.

The goal now is to implement these new ideas to try and achieve greater domestic success.

On a ridiculously windy day, which stopped any hoof and hope tactics and provided a beautiful comedy goal courtesy of a hunched Lancaster back, the York Futsal boys showed the world that we're a force to be reckoned with. The first 5 minutes was a pretty even affair with Lancaster having more of the ball but as we settled in to our stride; the chances started coming. We had some excellent chances in the first half and should have been 1 or 2 up going to half time. Though, I think their goaly proves that their should be some sort of maximum height restriction for Futsal keepers because he frankly looked silly in front of a goal where he could comfortably touch each side of.

The second half began well with a good finish from Tiago and a sigh of relief from the crowd to make it 1-0. Lancaster pulled one back after a period of pressure, York then reponded and stepped up a gear, with a great individual goal from Seb. Carl then had a sweet strike to make it 3-1, York seemed pretty comfortable until a hilarious freak goal from a strike that deflected of a Lancastian back and straight into the opposite of the net. Any chances of a come back were dashed when Derby finished to top off a sweet 4-2 victory.

Guy also deserves a big shout out, as man of the match, because his solid work at the back kept us in it at times and provided a great platform to attack from. Well done to all the players who took part and did Futsal proud and also to a decent turn out from the supporters. Next year should at last see Futsal being played for points in Roses 2006-Lancaster.
